that story sounds like bs to me. I thought that those "electro-guns" couldn't do crap except in a vacuum, and why would he get shocked if he was wearing sneakers? It's not AC and it has nowhere to go.
Yeah, it sounds like pretty big BS to me too.. the only place the HV in a monitor is in the coil/tranny, and within the CRT (and whatever filtering caps/chokes/etc). I'm not too familiar with CRT's, but most vacuum tubes run <500v. So lets say a CRT is 2kv. (just a guess).
2kv @ <100mA = not much of a jump. sure as hell not no fuggin 4 feet.
Never really understood the gun thing.. is it just the cathode? ITS IN THE DAMN TUBE!
Anyways, you could safely run a CRT with no cover (as long as you dont go touching stuff on the PCB).
And besides, If the "gun" "arced", then wouldnt it go to the closest ground? (ie the grounded tin box where the cord enters the monitor)
