I just grabbed a fully-heated 50W soldering iron between my fingers backwards...ouch. In shock, I toss it away and it goes behind my desk. Figuring my carpet is now on fire, I frantically go to unplug the iron. In doing so, i accidentally touch the metal prongs from the plug shocking myself with 120V and i fall back a few feet. I finally get it unplugged and luckily a single cord stopped the iron from falling onto the carpet. Now my heart feels kind of funny and i got a bad burn between 2 fingers :(

In the future, I recommend you don't operate heavy machinery, drive at night, or cook for the kids. ;)

Take the rest of the night off. Go to bed. This was a message for you to slow down.

i hate to say this but

Reading your story gave me the chills when you said the thing about the iron. But the plug thing just made me laugh out loud for like a few minute. Now my stomach hurts and i feel like i almost killed myself because the laughing is choking me.

I thought i had bad luck, but to get burned then try to be safe and get shocked where you get thrown from the outlet, LOL, wowzers.

that story sounds like bs to me. I thought that those "electro-guns" couldn't do crap except in a vacuum, and why would he get shocked if he was wearing sneakers? It's not AC and it has nowhere to go.

Yeah, it sounds like pretty big BS to me too.. the only place the HV in a monitor is in the coil/tranny, and within the CRT (and whatever filtering caps/chokes/etc). I'm not too familiar with CRT's, but most vacuum tubes run <500v. So lets say a CRT is 2kv. (just a guess).

2kv @ <100mA = not much of a jump. sure as hell not no fuggin 4 feet.

Never really understood the gun thing.. is it just the cathode? ITS IN THE DAMN TUBE!

Anyways, you could safely run a CRT with no cover (as long as you dont go touching stuff on the PCB).

And besides, If the "gun" "arced", then wouldnt it go to the closest ground? (ie the grounded tin box where the cord enters the monitor)

Or what plug are you talking about?
Please respond with semi-proper sentance structure, so I can make sense of it. Thanks.

Then you must be lying because the electron guns don't generate the colors.

Hehehehe.

I zapped myself a couple times with 120 lines. (120, 121, whatever it takes) The worst is when I was replacing a garbage disposal under the sink when I was about 20. I turned off the switch to it (dumbass move, you learn the hard way to use the curcuit breakers) and I was working on it when it happened. I was putting the wires together (I was laying under the sink to do this of course) and my elbow hit the drain pipe (before they went to plastic) and I completed a circuit. That hurt a lot, trust me.

I have a real nice circuit tester and fuse finder gizmo that you plug in the outlet and bring the other piece to the fuse box and it lights up when you move it over the right breaker. Really nice when the breakers aren't labled. If in doubt, I shut down the whole house. :D

A few months ago i had an opened 180W sparkle PSU which i was working on and go tthe shock of my life when i touched the 2 leads to the power input. Two weeks ago i took apart one of those throw away cameras to setup the flash to go off whenever i wanted and managed to touch the circuit board right where teh capacitor was located, another good shock. :)

I often complain about the lack of a predator for Man to thin the herd down. Perhaps Electricity could be that bleach in the gene pool I am looking for...:D
