you judge as a chopsticks n00b.

try playing a fps with your hand positions switched. its almost impossibly fustrating for a beginner, never mind someone who normally easily plays fps. does that mean wasd+mouse is dumb? but that kind of uncoordinated pain is i guess what n00b chopstick users experience. if you don't have the positioning/leverage down you will have no real force or dexterity in usage. easiest way to tell if person is chopstick n00b is if they sorta have the sticks pressed together in their fist, the two sticks shouldn't be touching at all in the hand, they should be rather far apart. even some asians use it wrong. with correct hold you should be easily able to do things like pick up a drumstick or something flat on a plate. its so versatile that it makes a fork seem like a.....crude stick with prongs on the end:p the ONLY thing forks are more efficient at are where you have to cut food first because the preparer didn't bother to do it for you, like a slab of steak.

Chopsticks are inferior in every way to a fork. It's just a tradition that Asians keep using. Nothing wrong with continuing it, but the fact of the matter is, the fork is easier and more effiicient to use.

Heck, if you want to start looking at people's eating utensils, the bare hand is the better than anything, but that's considered bad manners in most civilized nations.

It depends, the fork is more efficient for most things. But for rice (what asians eat most), it's easier to use a chopstick than fork.

actually, a lot of koreans use chopsticks with their rice. Sorry to disappoint.

Along with Wikipedia we have this:

Use spoon for rice and foods with liquid such as kimchi, stew, or soup; use chopsticks for other foods.

http://english.tour2korea.com/....asp?konum=1&kosm=m5_5

That's from the official Korean tourism agency. It looks like Koreans who use chopsticks for rice are either ignorant of or are ignoring their own traditions.

you're right, because when I'm eating food in my own home, I also:

taste soup/kimchi juice before trying rice and other dishes
do not make noise when eating
do not rummage rice/side dishes
do not leave any trace of food on my spoon
wrap bones and fish bones in paper to discard
try to keep pace with others when eating
and put my spoon/chopsticks where they were placed.

It's not my fault if you don't do those things, I'm not a cultural enforcer, merely a cultural pointer-outer. The point of using a spoon with rice is also much less severe than any of the customs you mentioned, and I'm sure it's more likely to be followed in Korea. You know, the country where Koreans are. Judging from your profile you're from America.

Hence why America never established chopsticks as part of its culture.

Reading this thread it looks like your right!

And then I thought, "ewww, everybody is putting their spit in the shared dishes".

the restaurant you went to didn't give you individual ladels for each of the plates of food?

probably better for the environment too if you cut them out of managed pine forest.

I'm guessing you've never seen non-disposable chopsticks.

Edit: As for the OP, there are pros and cons of each.

I agree.

Also I own several sets of none-disposable chop-sticks however I find them much more difficult to eat with because they all have a smooth finish & make it harder to effectively grip slippery food-items ... I prefer to use the disposable variety.

Man this thread is full of Chinese food elitists.

"If you ate REAL Chinese food"

"Chopsticks work better when you have your Chinese food prepared the RIGHT WAY"

I like the Spork, or a good Fork and Knife.

Oh and I eat rice with a spoon.

why do people like eating with fancy silverware over plastic? because its elegant. it has nothing to do with practicality. same can be said with chopsticks. eating with them enhances the dining experience for many. when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

i love chopsticks because of the texture and natural feel (wood, bone, ivory, what have you) both in the hands and the mouth. Putting metal or plastic into ones mouth is pretty gnarly (of course if it were pure gold, silver, or platinum, that'd override this sensibility). Also it is much easier to 'grab' things, such as from a collection of dishes/pots as in Dum Sum. Its also cleaner in that the transmission of saliva is minimized while removing food from community dishes because of the diminutive nature of the chopstick ends versus the fork or spoon which are rather clumsy and force one to plough through an entree to remove a helping.

I don't know about you, but Chopsticks are much better for eating than forks. I can eat individual grains of rice, not struggle to pick up peas, eat noodles without them slipping off my fork and do all kinds of neat stuff.

I thought Koreans didn't use chopsticks...

... wow.

As per Wikipedia:

Unlike other chopstick cultures, Koreans use a spoon for their rice and soup, and chopsticks for most other things at the table. (Traditionally, Korean spoons have a relatively flat, circular head with a straight handle, unlike Chinese or Japanese soup spoons.)

Looks like I thought half-right.

i'm pretty sure all asian cultures use spoons for their soups

Well, you'd be pretty wrong. Many use chopsticks and slurp the soup from the bowl.

Why is there so much stupidity in this thread?

You can scoop up a whole bunch of rice with a fork, while it's hard to pick it up with chopsticks. If you're counting shoveling it from the bowl into your mouth with chopsticks, then you can do the same thing with a fork.

not gracefully or efficiently.
eating rice with a fork is a chore. sure rice from a plate with chopsticks is stupid, thats why bowls are used. but to eat rice from a bowl while being able to pickup and eat prepared bits of other dishes from your bowl quickly and deliberately its hard to beat chopsticks. stabbing at food near your mouth with a fork is unwieldy.

Unwieldy? Do people really find it that hard to use forks?

I think we found your problem with eating rice with a fork. Your not supposed to stab the rice.

I thought Koreans didn't use chopsticks...

They do just not exclusively.

While we're on the subject, Koreans = food geniuses. They invented kimchi, stainless chopsticks, the whole fried spiral cut potato, and that container for cups that puts the drink on the bottom and the hot food on top.

edit: Sorry about that. Further reading of the thread shows you already made the point about chopsticks.

No. ONLY for sticky rice can you use chopsticks, and a fork works better for that anyway.

I second that opinion. Rice tastes better if you eat it w/ your hand.
