It didn't happen to have a meter on the adapter, did it?

Water trucks in my area are always filling up from hydrants, but they are metered...

One place that lets you get metered water off the hydrants.

They do make things that attach to the hydrant. Although I've never see normal people use them, I've see like DEP guys using it for a project and stuff...

just for your info, hydrant pressures are much greater than normal domestic water line pressures. :) it is idiots like the guy your saw who screws up all fire depart records by screwing around with hydrants. And NO it is not legal to steal water through a hydrant.

1) not possible. It would blow the line. You are getting about 500-1000 gallons a minute from that at full throttle.
2) Highly illegal.
3) I have yet to see any sort of adaptor that would convert it to garden hose size, AND reduce the pressure.
4) Even if you could hook up the line, the amount of force coming out of it, at such a small nozzel size, would be like power washing...the paint would be stripped off.

How about you take some pics of this so called "washing adapter" and show it to us.

Otherwise, stop posting, as you are annoyingly stupid.

It is possible though. The fire deparment has special nozzles. In NYC, its frequent for kids to open hydrants in the summer to cool down. If you go to a fire house, they have a special nozzle that provides a kind of sprinkler and is totally legal. They also have nozzles for a hose hookup which I've seen DEP work crews use. He is basically asking if its legal for him to obtain one and if so, where...

Um, fire hydrants arent just "on" or "off" it is a valve just like your faucet, turn a little, get a little, turn a lot, get a lot.

Here is what you do:

1) open hydrant
2) stick mouth around it. Drink fast.
3) Bladder pressure should build inside you until your "micro-hydrant" kicks in to start releasing the water.
4) Use "micro-hydrant" to wash car. Make sure not to take your mouth off the bigger hydrant so water not shut off.

I'm not a lawyer (nor do I play one on TV), but I'd imagine that it's legal for the fire department to open a fire hydrant and a very different matter for a private citizen to open a fire hydrant.

As someone else said, it's stealing water from the city. And I'd imagine that many municipalities would put far worse crimes on opening fire hydrants. Like Chicago apparently does.

i dont thing u want to mess with soemthing with that much pressure...im pretty sure u should get some training before attempting to safely use a hydrant...

think about it put the cap on wrong...causing pressure to built up and the cap comes flying off....one big dangerous solution....

besides if it were legal everyone would be doing it.

You idiots don't get it. It is LEGAL to open a hydrant if you follow the rules of the fire department. That is why during the summer, fire house encourage people to visit and pick up the nozzles.

Stop reading what you want to see...

I know of a place in Dabnury,CT where 15 houses are fed by a 1-inch garden hose connected to a fire hydrant.

Will find out how they did it.

Btw: the guy must be crazy to use a $ 50 adapter for hydrant to save $ 6 at car wash.

Stop reading what you want to see...

What I saw was plain and simple... that link, from the City of Chicago, says it's illegal to open a fire hydrant. The city's statement is quite unambiguous:

Opening hydrants is a crime. Call 9-1-1 any time you see one open

I have seen indications on other cities' websites indicating that if you ask, the fire department will open the hydrant for you under certain circumstances. (For instance, I believe I saw this on Detroit's website. The FD will come by and put a sprinkler adapter on a hydrant and open it for a neighborhood.)

Kevin, since you appear to be the expert on this, can you please provide documentation on when it is legal for a citizen to open a fire hydrant, and in what municipalities? (Just one or two examples will convince me that my current belief is incorrect.)

"Hydrants can be opened legally if it?s equipped with a City-approved spray cap. One illegally opened hydrant wastes up to 1,000 gallons of water per minute, while a hydrant with a spray cap only puts out around 25 gallons per minute. Spray caps can be obtained by an adult 18 or over, free of charge, at local fire houses."

Sorry to be OT, but I find it fascinating to see an actual conversation going on in a Wduaqnug thread. Am I in the twilight zone?
