Hello Students! I want to give you a brief update on the Michigan Drivers License ruling effective last week. I?ve been in contact with the Michigan Secretary of State?s Office and want to share the clarification I?ve received.

· If you already have a Michigan Driver?s License ? great!

· If it expires, you will NOT be able to renew it until further legislation is passed

· If you have a license from another US state, you may drive on it (as long as it is valid)

If you have a valid (unexpired) driver?s license from one of the countries listed below, you can drive on it ??An international driving permit is not required for residents of these countries to drive in the U.S. However, without an international driving permit, an interpreter may be required to determine the license?s validity if it was not issued in English.?

· Unfortunately, if you do not have a valid driver?s license issued by either Michigan, another US state or one of the countries listed below, you can NOT legally drive while here in Michigan.

Currently, there is much discussion and controversy over this; however, it is likely to be months before this issue is resolved. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed of any additional changes or clarifications.

This is some serious BS.... Idon't think its real. My country is not on the list and have been drive in this country for 7 year, and my license will expire this year.
Do they expect me to sell my car and ride a bike in the winter?
Is Michigan loosing its mind ?

The overwhelming support by universities, business and the legal community has lead to the amended bill that will continue to allow international students and scholars to apply for original driver?s licenses. Today, the Senate passed unanimously (38 - 0) and the House passed almost unanimously (a handful of no votes) legislation that will make clear that those in Michigan legally are eligible for a Michigan drivers license.

House Bill 4505 will now be transmitted to Governor Granholm. We expect her to sign the legislation tomorrow. Since Monday is President's Day (a state holiday) it is likely the earliest the Secretary of State will be able to begin issuing drivers licenses under the new law will be next Tuesday, February 19.

I have no idea how they selected countries. I mean what is the difference between Algeria and Morocco? whatever that what happens when you put idiot in offices to make rules.

I work and go to school in two different towns man. I drive like an hour on Mondays and Wed for classes.

I am honestly surprised that they let anyone with a foreign license drive legally in that state. That is scary as hell. I know for a fact that driving in India is nothing like driving in the US.

You can't just go down to the DMV and get a license? The test could not be easier. I don't really know how it works though.

Now I regret coming here legally. Because the other 10 friends I came here with, all were here at some point illegally and have their green cards now, they fake or paid for their marriage to get. None of them have a college degree, and here I am, did every got damn thing right ... now you tell me I can't even drive.

I never drove in my own country, I learned how to drive here. I got my license here when I turned 18 in 2001.

If your country is not on the list then you can still get an international driver's permit. That is considered a valid license I believe. The countries listed are ones where the individual country's license is honored in the US.

The weirdest part of this is that you can't renew a license... WTF?!

If you're here legally, you should have no problems getting your license renewed. If you'd followed the news, you'd know that this issue was a mis-interpretation of the law by the Michigan Secretary of State and is being corrected.

And you will deserve to be deported.

As stupid as this law seems to be, you can't ignore laws without expecting to suffer repercussions if you get caught. It especially bothers me when "visitors" to my country act like they're too fucking good to obey the laws here, even when they don't seem to make sense.
Don't like the laws in this country? LEAVE.
(after all, it's not like we have some obligation to provide an education to citizens of a foreign country, nor make our laws to suit them)

I'm not quite sure what that whole thing means, but honestly, I think no foreign licenses should be accepted as a legal driving license. Personally, I feel the law should call for a time period where you can (until your license expires), and then you get a new license.

What is happening with this Michigan case? Are you not permitted to get an international permit or something?

oh, and if you want to claim you will drive illegally and ignore U.S. laws, then GTFO. Seriously. I am in complete agreement with BoomerD's post (up two posts). I will be open with my support for any law that prevents illegals from basically being able to live in this country. It's not hard to get proper paperwork for legal residency.

I am too lazy to find proof but I would not believe that e-mail until you confirm those details. Don't get your panties all tied up in a knot until you really find out for sure what is going on.

This sounds like it is caused by the new anti-terrorism laws. Maybe Michigan hasn't been able to comply yet, or there is some other problem with the system.
