No it is not. An international driving permit must be accompanied by an actual driving license; it has no validity in and of itself. It is essentially a form that in several languages says "Dear law enforcement: this person has a valid driving license which he'd better have in his pocket or you can arrest him."

You can't just go down to the DMV and get a license? The test could not be easier. I don't really know how it works though.

Many nations allow you to drive in their country with your us/state issued drivers license. Why shouldnt we offer the same courtesy back?

The Michigan Secretary of State's office has just established new requirements for obtaining a Michigan driver's license or a State of Michigan Identification Card. Effective immediately, anyone applying for a Michigan driver's license or State I.D. card will have to present proof that s/he is a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident (green card
holder) of the United States.

A number of Michigan universities, including of course the University of Michigan, are currently engaged in discussions with the State of Michigan Secretary of State's office and with the legislature of the State of Michigan to ensure that they clearly understand the impact of this change and the importance of providing a means for people who are legally in the United States to obtain Michigan driver's licenses.

At this time, the International Center would also like to inform international members of the U-M community that it is legal for citizens of most countries to drive in Michigan using their home country driver's licenses. What the....Michigan is not going to do DL's anymore? What are they going to do with all the residents of the state who's license expires soon? Are they supposed to go apply in some other state and get a license so they can drive in their own? This doesn't seem to make any sense.

As stupid as this law seems to be, you can't ignore laws without expecting to suffer repercussions if you get caught. It especially bothers me when "visitors" to my country act like they're too fucking good to obey the laws here, even when they don't seem to make sense.

If I get deported, I get the the badass status. It just sounds gangsta "I got deported from the states".

I agree with you on pretty everything you said, except I think I have some rights to educate myself and do whatever it takes for higher education (without breaking rules of course). I don't think any country should forbid foreigners from coming to their country to seek higher education. You know, you might say ... It is my house, blah blah... but it's not so moral/ethical whatever the word is. I just don't think it would be right.

And don't worry I am leaving at some point, life is sweeter back home.
