I have actually found the opposite to be true: liberal people who want to be "progressive" will go against the grain on just about any issue and come off sounding like idiots since the prevailing opinion is usually prevailing for a good reason.
It's one thing to stereotype without thinking, but what you don't realize that you're guilty of the same type of thinking when you assume that all stereotypes are wrong. You're better off being completely neutral and objectively think about the issue at hand. If the stereotype is accurate most of the time, then it's mostly true.
I remember arguing with some moron about sickle cell anemia, and he was saying that I'm racist for saying that blacks are much more likely to get it than northern europeans.
What an uneducated person calls "stereotyping" or "racism", an educated person may just call "demographics". It may fit a stereotype, but it may be true and backed by studies.
