The family had some relatives in and were barbecuing and hanging out by the pool. When I got there, my neighbor walks out with a piece of watermelon, and I responded "Mmm, you got some watermelon!" The wife offered me a piece, and I got me a piece.

Later on, I realized what I said and hoped I didn't come off as racist. The neighbor family is black by the way.

You're not racist for saying that, but you sure seem retarded for making a post about nothing.

So only black people like watermelon now?

Black people stereotypically love watermelon, but no such stereotypes exist for whites.

If you had said "Hmm, you got some watermelon! You betta get back to da pickin' fields when you dun wid it! I said FAST boy!"

That would've been racist.

Feeling uncomfortable because you stated a fact is retarded. Check this out:

Your black neighbor got some watermelon. I bet he liked it too.

Yeah, I said it. What?

You might just be an unthinking stereotyper. Or a wannabe profiler - maybe the fbi would be a good fit.

I have actually found the opposite to be true: liberal people who want to be "progressive" will go against the grain on just about any issue and come off sounding like idiots since the prevailing opinion is usually prevailing for a good reason.

It's one thing to stereotype without thinking, but what you don't realize that you're guilty of the same type of thinking when you assume that all stereotypes are wrong. You're better off being completely neutral and objectively think about the issue at hand. If the stereotype is accurate most of the time, then it's mostly true.

I remember arguing with some moron about sickle cell anemia, and he was saying that I'm racist for saying that blacks are much more likely to get it than northern europeans.

What an uneducated person calls "stereotyping" or "racism", an educated person may just call "demographics". It may fit a stereotype, but it may be true and backed by studies.

we all do

That must be why we all like watermelon then.

In a more serious note though: how do they know that the original Africans that all humans are descended from are black?

If there's dirt or donkey jizz on your piece, I advise washing it off or getting another piece.

I think that these images (there are lots of them) on Wikipedia make a half-hearted attempt to put the dots on the national capitals.

Having grown up on a little farm where my parents grew watermelons for fun and profit, I can say that it's not just black people who like them. They're plentiful, cheap, delicious, and very refreshing when it's 90F outside and the dew point is in the 80s. This is probably where the stereotype came into play. If I were working outside all day and there was watermelon available, I'd be all over it.
