I may be racist

I got home from college today to spend a couple weeks in my hometown. My Dad was across the street helping our neighbors set some sort of "tent" thing up. The family had some relatives in and were barbecuing and hanging out by the pool. When I got there, my neighbor walks out with a piece of watermelon, and I responded "Mmm, you got some watermelon!" The wife offered me a piece, and I got me a piece.

Later on, I realized what I said and hoped I didn't come off as racist. The neighbor family is black by the way.

So only black people like watermelon now?

Black people stereotypically love watermelon, but no such stereotypes exist for whites.

I wasn't aware of this stereotype...

What about chicken?

There is an inordinately large number of Black people going through the drive though at the Hartz chicken place in Humbe so I would say it may just be true.

Glad I was not the only one, and I grew up in the south! All kids loved watermelon, blacks, whites etc.

I've always wondered about that stereotype. I have yet to meet a black person who doesn't love watermelon. It's just fascinating. I see nothing racist about it. I just laugh that it's the one stereotype (of any race, well besides asians and rice, but is that a stereotype or just now accepted fact? lol) that I have thus far seen go unbroken.

What is it about the south that makes watermelon so popular? It is definitely something I've seen more in Southern folk, regardless of race.

It may be because it grows rather well down South. The town I lived in for a while, Grand Bay, used to be known for its watermelon crops. They even had a festival for them every year coinciding with Independence Day. The climate is warm/humid/moist most of the year, and the semi-sandy soil type is perfect for growing them.

Besides, with the kind of summers we have, a watermelon really does a lot to help on the worst of those days...

You may or may not be. Do you always assume that:

- the inhabitants of trailer parks are white trash?
- people coming out of a church service are good?
- everybody on a computer bulletin board is a geek?

You might just be an unthinking stereotyper. Or a wannabe profiler - maybe the fbi would be a good fit.

I agree I do think it's much more of a southern thing and not of race at all. We grew it in TN, and GA. I live in FL now and it's not nearly as popular here, but it is not grown here in FL, soil is not right.

To make it even odder, according to here it's grown mostly in the north in the states.

Speaking of racial stereotypes. I have never seen a non-black person buy those jugs of red drink.

What you said just makes me think you like watermelon, apparently the wife took it the same way.

It would have been different if you had said, "hot damn I should have known you porch monkeys would have some watermelon, gimme some you big lipped, nappy headed hoe".
Definitely a bigoted statement but not racist, there is a difference.

You do realize that all humans trace their genetic history to the continent of Africa? We have just muddled our lineage by mixing while they have remained mostly pure. The greatest genetic diversity, and potential for the human race, resides in Africa.

I had to google little hug. I have seen those "juice barrels" before but I had never heard them by little hug.
