Particularly if they are one of those idiots that can't seem to see the road without their headlights, foglights, driving lights and fvcking cigarette lighter lit up in my mirrors.

knowing you are being an instigator is not a good thing.

He is not the instigator. The person riding his ass started the whole thing. He was just driving along, minding his own business and the jack@ass comes out of nowhere and rides his tail merely reminding him to execute the proper speed limit.
yeh, it's good practice to agitate people even if they've started it.

But that's not instigating... big difference.
an instigator starts things. maybe the tailgator doesn't think he is doing anything wrong therefore in his mind he isn't instigating anything, but after someone slows up and makes him go even slower in his obvious hurry well then yeh... somebody just started something.

True, I did assume that the tailgator was doing it on purpose, which would make him the instigator.

I do find it difficult to believe that someone riding 2" off my bumper would be oblivious to it, though...

i just try not to irritate people even if they are the ones being jackholes. one of these times someone you irritate back is going to be a real pyscho and pull out a gun or something.
best bet is just to get away from jerks on the road.

I figured he was trying to tell me to slow down so I started doing the speed limit. Boy was I surprised that he gave me the finger when he passed me.

I've driven in NJ to know that on the road, no one is polite or helpful... they're all jerks. Thus, I wouldn't have mis-interpreted the flashing lights.

yeah, i tend to speed a lot, usually 10-15 mph over the limit and you still get these @ssholes who feel the need to tailgate you. i usually slow down to the speed limit too.

Roadblock action , then to make it worse ill speed up and get just far enouth ahead so he thinks he can pass . Then i slow down.

After i watch them switch lanes like 4 times i let them go. Its too much fun try it.

LMAO, I *love* to do that!

The best is when you know where a speed trap is ahead... you piss them off, then finally give them the chance to pass you, 100 yards before the speed trap.

In my area, rarely does anyone go more than 7 or 8 over the speed limit.. I leave a reasonable distance between me and the car ahead of me *IF* that car is going the speed limit. If they're going 40 in a 55 (and no passing zone), expect me close to their bumper. However, when I get close to a passing zone (I know the roads well enough), I'll time it so I'm right on them and can quickly pass. Then, I drive my normal 8 mph over (except in the city.)

However, if I'm on a single lane state road, in an area with no passing zones, going 63 in a 55 and someone catches up to me like a bat out of hell, tailgates me, and starts the highbeam thing, you can guarantee I'm slowing down to the speed limit (or maybe 56-57 in a 55). Never below the speed limit. I don't reward their unacceptable behavior.

And, for what it's worth, although I live 5 1/2 hours away from NJ, I'd say that 4 out of 5 drivers who tailgate and turn on lights, etc. have NJ plates.

i get a cheap thrill out of not letting people pass me on the right when I am going with the flow and going faster than the right lane. I love it when they try to go around me and I just make sure that they can't, and they get all piseed. :D

Oh for what it's worth, if someone quickly catches up to me, turns their lights on, and drives right behind me, I'm going to assume it's an unmarked police car warning me not to speed, so of course, I'm going to slow down to the speed limit... :p :) I don't do it to aggravate the person behind me, honestly!

I don't. No one moves over to the left. If I didn't pass on the right I'd never get anywhere. I know its backwards, but I can't fight the moron storm...I can only hope to avoid it.

So he pushes down the clutch, gives it a bunch of gas and flips the switch, a 20 foot flame shoots out and over the hood of the car behind us... the guy slammed on his breaks and stayed like 20 car lengths behind us.

That puts that "laughter" in vehicular manslaughter!

But the most fun is to do exactly what you said, then wait for the idiot to decide to pass you, and then speed back up to the speed you were going before to piss them off just a bit more. Can be lots of fun.

Its also very safe and smart.

Oh I've been driving in the right lane before doing 73~75 in a 70 zone and had some jackwad drive up behind me & flash his lights. Not my fault the guy in the left lane is doing 72. I always hit the brakes on these morons hoping one will hit me. I need the bumper replaced anyways.

On a side note. I'll relay the story of me having fun with one of these idiots.
I'm riding north on my motorcycle on I-65 passing an 18-wheeler. Speedlimit is 65, I'm going ~70. I notice this little Acura is behind me not 6 feet from my rear tire!! I pass the truck and just as there is barely enough room the Acura darts infront of the truck & speeds ahead with a middle finger comming out of the sun roof. Of course this pisses me off... so I decide some payback should be in order. There was construction to widen the interstate a mere 2 miles ahead. So I pop the gas and punch it up to 90 and shoot right by the Acura. I hold it there for a few seconds and sure enough the Acura comes racing by me again at 100+ with another middle finger. I quickly backed off the throttle down to 60 and watched my mirrors. Sure enough I see the lights of a State Trooper come on as I pass him. Trooper races past me & pulls over said Acura.
I have no idea the penalty this idiot faced for doing 100+ in a 50mph construction zone but I think he deserved every bit of it.

LOL...ownage. Around here its double fine for speeding in contruction. And 100mph would have already probably been a huge, huge ticket...I think you may even automatically lose your license for those. Not sure though.

Blah blah blah passive aggressive pricks are the most dangerous drivers on the road.

It doesn't matter if it is a single lane or 100 lanes. The courteous (and logical) thing to do would be to pull over into the shoulder and let the guy pass (if its one lane).

Now we're supposed to get off the road so people who want to drive like maniacs can drive how they want to drive?

Your simply supposed to move, for a second, and let them pass. Is this concept foreign to you? Have you never seen people do it? Are you stupid?

Find me a driver's manual that says you're supposed to pull onto the shoulder to let someone other than an emergency vehicle go past you when you're already doing the speed limit. Any state will do.

I have never seen a person do that in my life, and no I am not stupid.

Edit: I have on very rare occasions seen school buses and farm equipment do that, but only when they are going below the speed limit and a long line of cars has built up. The OP is talking about going the speed limit.

I don't know about law wise, but when I was in upstate maine all kinds of people did that for us. My jaw was agape with awe...it was amazing that the people there were that considerate.

Other states should follow California, and make wide left turns legal. It is dumb that in other states when making a left turn you can't turn into the lane closes to the curb.

Not that you'd ever get pulled over for it. I see cops do it all the time, even though it's technically not legal.

Then why not do what California did and make it officially legal. California is the only state that it is officially legal.

My guess is it helps determine fault when accidents occur. It's a fact that it's safer to maintain your present lane when turning. When only one lane can turn, this is almost always the inside lane. If you go outside that lane and hit someone pulling out or coming from some other direction, you would be at fault for inproper lane change.

This is just my guess.
