Unhappy voters jam Capitol Hill phone lines

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The recent debate over the nearly $900 billion economic stimulus plan and revelations of tax problems by three Obama administration appointees have voters angrily jamming phone lines on Capitol Hill to air their frustrations to their elected representatives.

Their reactions are putting pressure on Congress and benefiting watchdog groups on both sides of the political aisle.

Capitol operators tell CNN Radio that phone lines have been jammed for the past two weeks, sometimes prompting busy signals.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Jim Webb, D-Virginia, said calls on the sweeping stimulus plan jumped from eight during all of January to hundreds a day now.

In a sampling of 12 Senate offices, half had so many messages that their voicemail boxes were full.

It's because of people like Betty Davidson.

"I'm very upset!" exclaimed the 63-year-old from Laguna Hills, California.

She called her senators Tuesday, frustrated with the almost $900 billion-dollar economic recovery proposal.

"What a joke!" she said.

But she is particularly incensed by news that Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and former Obama appointees Tom Daschle and Nancy Killefer didn't pay their taxes properly in the past.

"They can make the laws, but they don't have to abide by the laws," she complained. "It's only we taxpayers."

Those bitter words are like spring rain to nonprofit watchdog groups across the spectrum, who are seeing big boosts in interest.

"Just in the last week ... responses to our e-mails out to activists have jumped dramatically," said Grover Norquist, president of the conservative Americans for Tax Reform. "We've had more calls into our offices, more e-mails."

That same spike has hit Citizens Against Government Waste, which is also seeing a surge in e-mails, calls and angry posts to its Web site.

"These people are almost feeling like suckers now for paying taxes, because no one else does," said the group's vice president, David Williams.

He sees the tax issues and stimulus bill as hair triggers after months of frustration over bailouts, Wall Street greed and whether the rich and powerful get special treatment.

"In the past week, we have gotten numerous e-mails from people talking about how the interest rates on their credit cards are going up even though these companies have received taxpayer bailouts," he said, "and they don't understand why they're not feeling any relief."

At the left-leaning Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Deputy Director Naomi Seligman said that whenever a well-known politician, such as Daschle or Geithner, is involved in an ethics question, it does raise some interest for them.

Seligman suggested that tax issues are raising the greatest ire.

"I think the average American is looking at their taxes during tax time and saying 'Wow, I pay my taxes. Why aren't these guys?'" she said.

That's certainly how Davidson feels. She's worried about shoveling debt onto her grandkids from the stimulus bill, and she is convinced Washington is corrupt.

"I'm just getting so sick and tired," she said.

Ms. Davidson is a hero in my books. We an entire nation of people like her.

But I feel that the tradition media is under-reporting public outrage, outrage from both sides of aisle.

I also feel as if Obama is being too quiet through all this.

This is what happens when Harriet Christian and her ilk get a hold of lawmaker's phone numbers.

BTW, how'd the "mad as hell" approach work for Harriet during the election? PUMA?

I have both underpaid and overpaid my taxes a number of times throughout the years. Our tax codes are one giant mess and even the best accountants make mistakes with when dealing with diversified incomes, mistakes I am sure as hell in no position to catch. Does that make me a bad person?

That said, this corporate socialism shit is absurd.

Too quiet my ass. He is responsible for this by nominating these three assholes. Why haven't we found one lousy fuck that overpayed their taxes?

I wanted to be part of the outrage, and no, I don't see one who over-payed. If I were in politics I'd have ten accountants checking my taxes and publish them for people to critique. You know perfectly well that any mistake in underpayment if found by others will kill you if you are in public life. I smell indifference and greed. Screw them. They had a deep obligation to be clean on the tax thing just like that filthy Clinton had no business getting a blow job from a 21 year old as President of the United States. All this rage the country if feeling is the fault of three people who fucked up. One is in and two, supposedly the best for the job they were chosen for, lost because they were careless or dishonest. We will never know, but their services are ruined. People who should have been responsible let us down. Stupid assholes.

NO, it doesn't make you a bad person at all! In fact, if you can prove that you intentionally didn't pay your taxes you are well qualified for a cabinet position in this administration! Are you interested? However, if you paid your taxes your chance of getting nominated diminishes. Unless, it was a honest mistake just like Tim did!

Leon Panetta seems to be a perfect guy! It seems he didn't pay his taxes either!

OP, exactly what would you have Obama say? Since you seem to think he is "being too quiet"

Well as soon as you find out somebody is a tax cheat you don't make them the secretary of the treasury and in charge of the IRS.

That would be like putting Oprah in charge of Jenny Craig.

Nope. But you are not trying to run the IRS  Or Health Care, or the Budget...

Well I voted for Obama, still support Obama, and I'm annoyed at the stim package. Something needs to be done, but this is absolutely one bill that needs to not have a bunch of bullshit thrown in it as a cookie for some fuckwit congressmen to vote for it. People are losing jobs, businesses and money left and right and some douches don't want to vote for it unless they get funding for [insert bullshit pet project here] on the basis it may in some way spend money that some guy somewhere will earn and therefore stimulate the economy. Or some idiot just opposing it to score political points for the next election, and not giving a shit whether its actually a good plan or not, and will save someone's ass other than their own.

Maybe they should try to do the right thing for just once. I don't expect it to last, certainly don't trust Rs to run it any better, but the D congress needs a quick snap to the head lest they thing we gave Obama and Ds a big win as license to go around like its Fing Xmas.

Party is over, and we just woke up hungover and realized we spend half the night fuckin fat chicks and their skanky sisters and didn't use a rubber on any of them bitches. Its serious times and voters are not going to tolerate nonsense from anybody.

True enough, but we're trying our damnedest to reach that point. If this depression doesn't do it, the bubble that cushioned our fall will be guaranteed to do it. Next time it pops will be the last time.
