medical condition?? PLEASE. i admit, there are some people that are just destined to be fat, thing they can do to help. but the VAST majority of people are just lazy fvckers who refuse to help themself. the most they will do is try some maricle diet pills and when that doesnt work they at least have the excuse of "i tried". all they need to do is get off their fat ass and go jogging and lift some wieghts.

Actually, a couple years ago I saw the weight creeping on and started running. Then I took up weight lifting. My lifestyle is not 100% healthy, but it's healthy enough to stay in fairly good shape. But, like I said, I can sympathize with a lot of overweight people because I know what starvation yo-yo diets do. They end up making you fatter, and harder to lose the weight again. Not to mention the people who are genetically predisposed to obesity.

The real question is, have you ever been overweight and lost the weight? And by overweight, I mean 20lbs or more?

Until you have, do not think to tell others how simple it is.

I'll have to include dumb f^ckers like you. Have you ever heard of depression, diabetes, thryroid conditions, arthritis, other joint problems. Like I said, I surely hope that you're never in that position in your life.

Just to let you know, I was skiing about 10 years ago and tore ligiments in my right hip. I was doing some crazy extreme skiing sh*t that I shouldn't have been doing. I was laid up for nearly 6 months and put on 40 lbs because of the inactivity. I actually ended up putting on more weight after this because of the depression of putting on the initial 40 lbs. I managed to get the weight off, but it was a struggle.

Once again, I certainly hope that you're in that position and get ridiculed or picked on for it too.

I was lucky. I saw the weight coming on early at 34 and did something about it that did not include yo-yo dieting, so it's fairly easy for me to lose fat. For others, it is not so easy.
Oh man, this is why I avoid being a prick about people's weight. Right now I'm 22, eat six times a day, and it's absolutely impossible for me to go a pound over 140 lbs. Checked with the doc to see if it was a thyroid issue; it's not. He told me to enjoy it while it lasts. Ugh...I'm starting to cut down and act healthier now so it's not a total shock when I near thirty and have to eat responsibly.

Friends, beware of Amused's words. They were once us. Soon, we will be them. :(

Let me add to this:

The body jealously gaurds it's fat stores. One has to be very careful how one loses the weight, or the body will pack on as much fat as it can to prepare for the next starvation cycle. Like I said, it is NOT simple. It is very easy to do it wrong and end up fatter than before. And with popular culture throwing fad diet after fad diet at them, it is VERY understandable how some people end up in that situation.

You are correct about that sir.

I don't agree with Salvador, though. Yes, SOME PEOPLE have special conditions, but there are far too many obese people in this country for everyone to use that excuse. It's not like 25% of the population suddenly developed a condition that only applies in this country and this generation. Most people are just lazy, and have wrecked their metabolism because they tried a bunch of fad diets BECAUSE THEY ARE LAZY.

Have you every tried, and stuck with a fad diet? It takes massive will power. It's actually the HARD way to go about it. For me, at least... Just changing my diet to a healthier one was, and still is a bitch.

For me, exercise seemed like the easier way... luckily, I was correct in my lazy decision. :)

I see more overweight people in my intensive care unit than any other kind of person...many are resorting for gastic bypass and end up with many many complications, hence being in my unit. One wonderful YOUNG man actually told me that this was the only thing that was going to work for him because he was too lazy to just eat less and exercise. Another woman told me that even this won't work for her because she was willing to bet she could stretch her stomach once she was released from the hospital. She did. Her stomach "leaked" and she consequently died. Following a two MONTH hospital stay, including 6 weeks on a ventilator, she went to Walmart where family reports she actually ate off the shelves....died a few weeks later.

I see so many examples of pure ignorance that it blows my mind. Skoorb and I _do_ practice what we preach...eating healthy, having "junk" in limited amounts and exercising. Neither of us are overweight and we are very healthy. Heck, right now I am gaining weight for the first time in my life and that is due to pregnancy and growing a child! People tell me that my body will never be the same...well, I shall have something to show them. :)

I feel very sad for overweight people. Sad that they got to that point in the first place. I can't imagine how difficult it can be for some to lose weight...but they will never know or enjoy the rewards unless they try. :)

The only thing I'd have to say is some people (not many) have medical conditions. My aunt is one of them. Since she has been born she's had thyroid problems and she's finally getting something done. The past year, she's been going to weight-loss programs to get her ready for gastro bypass surgery. She was about 450lbs last year, she's down to 370 now.

Plus, she's loves to eat. At least she admits she has a problem and is trying to work on it. The problem I have with obese people is that they blame everyone else except themselves.

Like they are suffering from Cantgetoffcoucharitis or Eatbecausetheyaredpressedthattheyaresofataritis?

I would like to see a mandatory exercise program for health benefits ot at the very least, scale the price according to your bfi.

Look at the % of obese people before 1980 and that's the % of people who are genetically predisposed or have some other condition. The % that grew after that are people who have gained weight with the recent change in leisure activities (active to inactive). That's less than half the people who are obese.

Wow. I hope my aunt doesn't have that problem. She's been going to these programs so she can control her eating habits and the weight she lost was all natural. I'm very happy for her and I'm glad she realizes what her consequences are of being overweight, dying early. And she want's to live long. :)

Yup. I hear that!

Thryoid problems, if not treated, are one thing leading to weight gain. Once they are treated and the person decides to do something about the added weight, the people generally return to their normal weight. That's wonderful for her weight loss already! Go Aunt!

Cashman With any surgery, they are complications. Just remember that MANY never have any problems....we always hear about the few that did. :)

Did any of you ever see that mini series on Discovery Channel called "Body Story". One was a really great documentary about a guy trying to loose weight. They went into excellent detail about why his starvation diet didn't work, and why his exercise/responsible eating diet did work.

Pretty neat to see what is really going on inside your body.

Hey Loser! Don't judge a book by its cover. That person could have one of many medical conditions that would prevent them from using stairs. I'm a Physical Therapist and I tell my patients with certain knee problems to avoid stairs at all costs.

Overall, I know what your saying. Theres a lot of lazy people who need way more exercise than they're getting currently, but ya can't assume everyone is in that boat.

I know... asking people to take personal responsibility? I'm such a dick.

*waits for someone to come in, claim they are fat due to their genes, while they kill off the last two donuts left in the Krispy Kreme box*

Asking someone to lose weight through hard work is one thing. Making fun of them and insulting them is another.

A lot of this comes from people quite like myself. I used to be able to eat anything and everything and not gain a pound. I never understood how people could get fat and always thought it was all their fault.

It's not, in many cases. They can eat the same things you do, and do the same amount of activity you do, yet gain weight like crazy. It takes MORE for them to control their weight than it takes for you. And for many people, the weight creeps up on them and yo-yo diets have made it nearly impossible to lose the weight because their body has been thrown into starvation mode too many times.

Like I said before... Just wait until most of you are 35-45 years old and struggling with weight gain.

I was lucky. I saw the weight coming on early at 34 and did something about it that did not include yo-yo dieting, so it's fairly easy for me to lose fat. For others, it is not so easy.

Well my point is that acting like you arent fat and ignoring it doesnt do anything to solve the problem. Maybe calling someone fat-ass isnt nice, and it might not be what they want to hear, but the truth gets vicious when you corner it. And while it make take some people more work than others to stay trim, I am pretty sure I fall into that category. None of the men in my family are skinny. My goal isnt to get thin, just to get trim. If you expend more energy during the day than you take in via food and drink, you will lose weight. Maybe you screwed yourself by using a starvation diet. But the key phrase in that sentence is "you screwed yourself", IMO.

Myself, I'm delaying a $2/hour raise in a job that looks good on my resume to get a physical job this summer (90% I'll be going back to my old employer and installing fence, just waiting for him to call me back and confirm). This is not be feasible for everyone, I know. But the point is you have to make sacrifices somewhere to lose weight. Saying "dont call me fat" and being pissed that someone would tell you the truth to your face (albeit rudely) gets you no where, except to the vending machine for some comfort food. Admitting that you are, in fact, fat, and then doing something about it gets results.

Notice I never called it easy. Rolling over and resetting the alarm for later and not going running is very tempting to do at 5:15 AM. But every time I consider doing that I remember this:
There are always two choices. Two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.

Hey I weigh 750lbs. It's a gland problem. Really.
It has nothing to do with the fact that the people at the chinese buffet cringe when I come in and eat 15 heaping plates of food. It has nothing to do with the fact that I go to mcdonalds and order 5 supersized double quarter pounder with cheese meals.
It has nothing at all to do with the fact that my idea of exercise is walking from the table to the buffet.

:p

Ok all kidding aside, yeah there are a few people who have gland or whatever problems causing them to be overweight beyond their control. However, for most of the world it's just because we are lazy, or/and eat to deal with stress or other problems. For many people losing weight is even more difficult than people trying to quit smoking.
