Every moto phone I've owned including the e815 has the battery charger contacts fuck up after about a year because of that stupid design

I don't recall having any charge problems w/ my e815, but I absolutely loved that phone (for a non-PDA phone). I ended up washing it, which really quickly killed it. :(

Not sure it's going to have the necessary mindshare to beat out the iphone. Iphone's hardware sucks ass, it's the huge user base that's constantly pumping out apps and itunes+podcasts that makes it worth it.

How much data have Droid owners downloaded so far? Passed 53MB this evening, got the phone around 5:30 Friday.

Does the google map thing count against your download limit? I would assume so, so how quickly does that tend to add up?

Yeah, that was a weakness. I've had mine mess up a few times, but it's still working several years later. I think their new phones use mini usb at least.

Android remains open source http://www.android.com/

Several reasons for the buzz,

It's the first Android 2.0 phone
Google Navigation first implementation
First phone Verizon hasn't demanded be crippled (they typically take wifi out of Verizon smartphones)
It's not a Storm (Verizon's last attempt at an iPhone killer, you remember the Storm, the phone with a >50% return rate?)
It's on Verizon's fairly robust 3G network
It's the best smartphone that's not made by Apple
Verizon & Moto have some interesting ads out generating some buzz.

storm2 came out a week and a half before droid did and had wifi so that's false.

when the iphone comes to verizon next year, the suckers that got the droid will be regretting it.

I doubt the iphone comes to verizon next year...

A lot of users change phone every few months. Some even change carriers too. The only sucker around here is uninformed people such as yourself...

LOL, the Storm is so tainted from it's first gen release, no one cares. And I was thinking of the Storm 1, I haven't given enoough of a shit about the Storm 2 to pay any attention to it's release date.

Remember all the lines of people who wanted to buy the Storm 2? Oh wait...

I went in with the money and intention to get the droid, and walked out very happy with the Eris instead.

I shake my head at folks who dump big bucks into the "latest and greatest" new phones...but are soon disillusioned when within a few months, something better comes out...(sounds like everything else "techy" doesn't it? :p )

That's how technology has been for many years. I shake my head at people who wait and wait and wait and wait and wait because "something else better is coming out." Enjoy what is out.

Mine did that last week, after 4 years. I cleaned the contacts and all was well. *whew* I don't want to replace my phone, let alone, Verizon will require me to switch from my old $35 plan to a different one, $40 being cheapest.

Doesn't have have Android 1.5 on it?

I believe its 1.5 - could be 1.6 - but HTC has said that their Hero-variants (which really, the Droid Eris is) will be getting 2.0, probably by the end of the year.

If you don't like physical keyboards & prefer the HTC SenseUI, the Droid Eris is a nice phone. Its still using the ancient ARM11 processor thats in pretty much every HTC phone on the market right now, but its still a solid phone, especially for $99.

I've been thinking of getting a Droid myself. It would be my first cellphone in my name on my own contract. Good idea y/n?

I'd probably keep it for at least a year, and I like the way the phone looks. Are there better alternatives? The iPhone just doesn't appeal to me, so that really doesn't count.

Yes the D. Eris runs 1.5, and I love it. Simple, Fast, and completely customizable. HTC did say something to the effect that the Eris will be getting 2.0 as soon as they port their Sense UI to 2.0.

my Verizon XV6800 (HTC Titan) which is pretty old now also has a working wifi.

Anyway, I just saw that I can do the Droid for $150 after my discounts... the Eris for $50... very tempting, but the data plans... not so much. :( Anyway, why are these new phones so cheap but have so much capability? All my previous smartphones (Treo, HTC) I've had to pay $250+ even after discounts. They all come down since everyone has capable smartphones?
