can someone tell me the difference between email & web and unlimited data usage? Seems unlimited data usage really only adds the ability to sync wirelessly. All this google gps stuff and any other common droid task would work with a simple email & web plan right?

Also, I know it's a requirement to choose a data plan in order to add this phone. Can I soon remove the data plan and just keep the phone? Don't see a reason why not unless others have had experiences...

if you have your verizon account on a personal bill, and it isn't billed to a business, then you can do everything on the $30/month data plan. The $45 plan is specifically for business accounts, and simply highlights Exchange access as a feature. However, on a personal account you can use Exchange servers on the $30 plan. Verizon describes these things terribly on the website. Personal accounts CAN opt for the $45 plan iirc, but really all you are doing there is being buddy buddy with Verizon and paying them extra as a tip of sorts, as you gain nothing on a personal account by opting for the $45 plan.

They have to recoop the cost of subsidizing the phone, you will be required to keep the data plan until they do that. For instance, on my iphone with ATT I have had it for a little over a year and I just because eligible for an upgrade, meaning they recooped the cost so I could switch to a normal phone and not pay for the data.

If anyone was curious about video performance....

Granted these are compressed to Youtube, and not exactly the same, but two videos (of me missing deadlifts, ha), one taken on the HTC Touch Pro 2, the other taken by the Droid....

Touch Pro 2
Droid

It was also a different person taking the videos - I don't know if that's what caused the extra shakiness in the Droid's video, but the colors look a lot richer and less washed out in the Droid's video than the TP2.

Will there be an extended life battery available for this?

I'm at half way used and I've barely used anything on it today except for messaging. The battery meter in the android OS says my display is using the most of the battery at 35%. I reduced the brightness on it and let it time out faster but I can see battery life being an issue if I use it heavily. I have everything turned off in the battery widget except the screen and I have no apps running other than messaging.

My friends with Pre and Iphones say their battery is about the same..

edit: forgot to mention, it's most likely because my office has HORRIBLE reception and it bounces between 1x and 3G while in here. I can see it draining my phone due to all of this activity.. any tips on this?

Can you turn 3G off? If not, then you might want to look into a signal booster.

There's an app for that ;)

Seriously- there''s some free apps that can lock in 2g/3g.

Also, a BIG LOL to the free Vibrator app that someone uploaded.

I'm sure there will be an extended battery, but a huge one would be difficult - phones like the G1 and the Pre can replace the cover and put a bigger battery in that makes the phone wider - with the battery door on the Droid, that is more difficult. We could probably see a 1500 or 1600 mAh battery though.

Today was my first day of "normal" usage with the Droid, it has been pretty good for me. I'm down to 30% at this point, which isn't great, but it should last the rest of the day - as opposed to my short-lived stint with the Palm Pre that would die before I left my office.

Weak reception definitely drains your battery faster. Do you have wifi at work? If so, enable WIFI whenever you're there - that way it won't bother trying to scrape together that weak signal.

There is a widgit that forces 2G instead of 3G, but I don't see that as an option on Droid. Perhaps Verizon has it disabled.

Great idea, it's on wifi now.

Update planned for Dec 11th, looks like it addresses a number of issues including the camera. Hopefully the multi-touch browser support is in this release (I've heard that it is from a few different people).

Motorola Probably Sold 100,000 Droids in First Days

Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Motorola Inc. probably sold 100,000 Droid phones in their first weekend on the market, a sign that the handset maker is recovering even though it still trails Apple Inc., an analyst said.
Verizon Wireless, the carrier for the device, had 200,000 Droid phones on hand, and most stores sold at least half of their stock, Mark McKechnie at Broadpoint AmTech Inc. said yesterday. Including other models, Motorola will sell 1 million phones based on Google Inc.’s Android software in the fourth quarter and 10 million in 2010, he said.

Motorola and Verizon are competing against a new version of Apple’s iPhone, offered in the U.S. through AT&T Inc. Apple sold more than 1 million of the latest model in its weekend debut in June. Motorola’s share of the global phone market dropped to an estimated 4.7 percent last quarter from about 5.5 percent in the second quarter, the company said last month.

“I see the first few days as encouraging,” McKechnie said. “There seems to be pretty good demand -- they’ve taken the right steps and picked a good partner with Google on the Android side.”

Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Illinois, rose 6 cents to $9.04 at 9:54 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Before today, the stock had more than doubled this year.

The Droid, which uses Google’s Android operating system, went on sale Nov. 6 on Verizon’s Web site and in retail stores. It costs $199.99 with a two-year agreement after a $100 mail-in rebate. Apple’s basic iPhone costs $99 with AT&T, while its newer 3GS model costs $199.

‘Much Anticipated’

Verizon and Motorola ads demonstrate Droid features that aren’t available on the iPhone, including running more than one application at a time and allowing users to swap batteries on the go.

The debut of the Droid was “exciting given its much anticipated arrival,” said Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson, who declined to comment on sales numbers. Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, didn’t return an e-mail seeking comment.
The Droid’s release is a step in the right direction for Motorola, said Jim Suva, an analyst at Citigroup Inc. in San Francisco.

“It wasn’t as good as the iPhone, but anybody that was expecting that had their expectations too high,” said Suva, who recommends buying Motorola shares. Traffic in Verizon stores through the first three days was “continually good,” he said.

Motorola may sell 1.3 million Android phones in the fourth quarter and 9 million next year, Suva said. Apple will sell 8 million iPhones this quarter and 28.5 million next year, he predicts.

Smartphone Demand

Shipments of so-called smart phones, which allow users to surf the Web and compose e-mail messages, climbed 4.2 percent to 43.3 million in the third quarter from a year earlier, according to market researcher IDC.
Still, as unemployment climbs to the highest level since 1983, carriers may have a tougher time persuading customers to sign up for the pricier data plans that come with smart phones, MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen said in an interview.

“I have this nagging suspicion that Android is being overestimated by technology enthusiasts,” said Kuittinen, who is based in Greenwich, Connecticut. He advises investors to sell Motorola shares, which he doesn’t own. “They haven’t really resonated with average consumers.”

what is a good task manager/killer and what battery widget?

I use advanced task killer (ATK).

The battery widget is installed from the main screen using options -> add -> widget -> power control. I put it on the 'left' side of the screen.

It's part of our web hosting service plans. We're contracted with Google to provide support and setup for them. It's a pretty common service.
So basically small businesses buy hosting from you, and you also provide support and setup to get them email, google docs, and calendar?

Quick battery update....

Had the phone off the charger about 17 hours today. Didn't use the screen much (maybe 50-75 text messages/IMs, some browsing, some emails), but used other functions quite a bit (downloaded/listened to 1hr/20MB of podcasts, 30 mins of Pandora, 20 mins of MP3s, recorded a 50 second/18MB video clip that I uploaded to youtube, plus the usual background gmail/exchange/facebook/twitter/stock/weather). Pretty good considering all I used. Some observations -

-The internals of the phone are pretty power-efficient, but the screen is a hog. I barely used things that required the screen, and it still was the biggest battery drain
-I only used wifi about 2.5 hrs today, and it was 6% of the usage. That seems abnormally high.

Do you get access to all the podcasts that itunes does? Or is it a entirely sep system?

I don't use iTunes so I don't really know - I'd imagine as long as it has an RSS feed, the app can find it.

I tend to agree with this, I have a G1 and love it, I prefer it to the iPhone, but it's not a phone you could hand to a soccer mom and expect her to like/use. IMHO, Android phones are for the techno elite, and those of us that love tech.

Motorola's phone division has been and continues to be on life support, Droid being successful may not even save them.

I was going to post something similar actually, try turning down your screen. I have it set very low and you would be amazed how even the smallest adjustment affects the battery life.

Yesterday I downloaded about 50MB to the phone, sent about 50 texts, browsed the web, made about 35 min worth of calls, etc and I had 80% full at the end of the day, JUST by taking the screen brightness down to a lower setting. It's still quite visable. The screen is an absolute hog.

I have the screen set to auto-brightness, which dims it a bit more than I'd like indoors...but it does save battery life.

I have it set to about 25% manually and it's still very visable both indoors and out at least for me. The auto-adjust still hogs the fuck out of battery in my opinion. I was able to basically get it so I can charge this thing every other day and still use it pretty liberally by playing with the brightness.

Yea, I think the auto-adjust is kinda over-sensitive, and indoor lighting is right on the edge of two levels of brightness - it often goes back and forth depending on the angle I'm holding the phone to the lights. I might just try it a little lower. I've got the power widigit installed so its not like I can't change it manually.

Well, not really. Hosted Apps plans are more complex than that. They have an Intranet that gets set up, shared contacts and calendars, etc.

Now that I've had the phone for nearly a week I wanted to post some of my "issues."

1. Battery life kind of sucks. I use it about the same as my iPhone 2G yet it lasts a much shorter time period. I'm still playing with the screen brightness to find a good balance, but that beautiful display just loves power...

2. When in the docks (I have both the desk and car dock) I would like it to stay on and unlocked, as long as it is getting power. I like to put it in the car dock and play music from it, but it continually locks. I don't want to have to go into the settings every time to change the timeout to "never." What it really needs is a settings menu for each dock (as there will surely be others) that allows display and home screen settings to be set.

Other than that I simply love this phone.

Bring the brightness down a lot. I did this in addition to killing un-needed apps and turning off the wifi/bluetooth/gps when not in use and I can go probably 3 days of moderate usage without needing a recharge. I still have ~70% free and I charged it on Tuesday.
