To those that have one, how is the battery life so far?

edit: sweet, my post count got reset

I've had it since Friday at about 5:30 PM MST and I've drained the battery below 25% twice. However, this has been with Wifi and GPS turned on, and downloading constant apps through the Android Marketplace. Obviously, the screen was on most of the time. I expect the battery life will improve once I've got things set up, configured, and the apps I want downloaded.

why would you get droid? its a half baked phone in the first place. in the second, 4g will be out early next year and iphone 4g and tour 2 4g will make droid seem totally gay by comparison. enjoy your droid....for the next two years!

You're an idiot.

LOL, by your post we can determine 2 things, you failed grade school English, and you have no idea about the time frame for 4G rollout. And yeah, the unannounced 4G iPhone that might show up in Q3 2010?

The Tour 2? What are you, a 60 year old trapped in a 14 year old's body?

Using gay as a pejorative term is really cool, oh wait, it's 2009, not 1983.

Strong post dude... :colbert:

So this is the world's first Android 2.0 phone that's why it's so exciting? Didn't Android go closed-source with 2.0?

Android remains open source http://www.android.com/

Several reasons for the buzz,

It's the first Android 2.0 phone
Google Navigation first implementation
First phone Verizon hasn't demanded be crippled (they typically take wifi out of Verizon smartphones)
It's not a Storm (Verizon's last attempt at an iPhone killer, you remember the Storm, the phone with a >50% return rate?)
It's on Verizon's fairly robust 3G network
It's the best smartphone that's not made by Apple
Verizon & Moto have some interesting ads out generating some buzz.

To add to that, it has built in turn by turn GPS at no addt. charge, a huge number of apps, and Google is known for adding free cool upgrades to it's products constantly. I have a feeling once this phone gets out in the wild, it's going to generate even more buzz that it is now.

yday when i was trying to locate the verizon wireless store in union sq, i pulled up the store location online. i couldn't find it and inadvertently clicked on the address in the browser (which isn't linked btw - i think the browser just recognizes addresses). google maps opens up, it marks the destination and then has a tracker to locate where i was. i was able to walk to the store with maps directing me! was freaking awesome.

So if somebody compiled it one can upgrade a Google G1 to Android 2.0? If so I'll get a G1 to play with.

Even better than that...you could have pressed the search button, spoken "navigate to Verizon Wireless" and it would have found the nearest one and turned on navi to get you there. Freaking cool.

I have to say I'm not entirely impressed with the battery life but for what it is I'm not surprised. I've also been setting up a lot of stuff, downloading a lot of apps, etc. I installed the battery widget and turned everything off on it so I haven't given it a fair shake quite yet. I really am hoping this won't need to be charged every day...

To those familiar with the battery app. If I turn off every box but the screen brightness, will those features be enabled should I use an app that requires them? I did some tests with the navigation and google maps and it seemed to work fine with these options set to off. Also, what is the 'refresh' box for? I would imagine it constantly polls gmail for new emails or something along those lines.

No...turning them off in the battery app is the same thing as killing them in the settings section. You might be able to override that in that app (google maps or whatever) that requires that service. But its either off or on...its not just when you use that app.

That being said...my mytouch's internet has been screwy for a week now. I'm going to give crap-mobile one more try and then I'm going to order a droid. I only use it for internet, so I am beyond pissed.

I'm so on the fence about getting a Droid.

The last smart phone I had was an HTC Touch and it was so slow I got fed up with it and went back to a dumb phone.

I'm also curious to see what Verizon has coming out in the near future. I'm assuming they don't have any killer phone coming out, otherwise they wouldn't be putting as much money behind the Droid as they are.

The HTC Passion/Dragon looks awesome. 4.3" Screen? Android? Should be out before the end of the year, right? Sounds perfect. Verizon does have a 30 day return policy....hmm....

Wow, Verizon wants to charge an ETF of $350 on advanced devices? Are they actually going to do this? Couldn't they just man up and charge people more on their phones instead of doing something this deceptive?

I'd assume the majority of people don't have to end their contract early.

Is the data plan part of the contractual committment? So if a phone broke and you replaced it with a dumb phone and dropped the data plan (or even if you just didn't feel like paying for data altogether), would you be assessed the ETF?

with most cell companies there is an ETF for the data and an ETF for voice.

is your guys's googlemaps painfully slow? i played around with 2 units at the verizon store and it takes forever to load up the maps in googlemap when I tried to move around or zoom out, almost as if it's on a 36.6k connection. the store is in a giant mall, could it be the connection problem?

how accurate is it?

I was reading a cnet review of the google gps service and it mentioned being off by like a block+ -- obviously not an option when driving in an urban area if I ever wanted to replace my garmin gps.
