You should enlist, right after the guy that doesn't have his HS diploma.

That was the easiest test I took.

Truly, all the ASVAB proves is you're not a clinical moron.

I wiped my ass with the results and went to university instead.

Our country has no shortage of poor disillusioned youth for cannon fodder.

Sounds like it is time for a vacation.

Increasing pay while lowering admissions standards...sounds like they're targeting the poor to me.

The other breakthrough is less well known, and has been a long time coming. The army has found ways to lowering its admission standards in order to get all the volunteers it needs. For example, the army allowed up to four percent of the recruits to be of the second lowest aptitude level (Category IV). The percentage of recruits who are high school graduates is now 82 percent, versus 92 percent three years ago. More recruits are being let in on waivers. The most common items waived are medical conditions, criminal records or drug use.

1. enlist and go to college
2. go to college and join ROTC and become an officer.
3. go to college and figure out something there.

i love serving our country and i leave for Iraq in 2 weeks.

If you still want to enlist, at least wait for for the Democrats to set a pull-out date for Iraq attached to the latest funding bill (or cut the funding altogether).

We aren't losing 80+ "intelligence" officers every month. We need, as Whoozyerdaddy pointed out, more hyper-velocity projectile impediments.

on a side note, I get asked a lot of questions about the military when I go somewhere in my uniform. The other day I stopped at a gas station and this redneck looking guy started chatting with me about enlistment opportunities. Towards the end of the conversation he told me he has been unable to get into the army because he has scored too low on the ASVAB 3 times (even too low for the most basic job!)! I now wonder if he has the IQ of a chimpanzee.

So I am one of the poor disillusioned youth for cannon fodder after 19 years in the military? Kudos to you for going to school while me and mine bled for you. It is your right. However, it is not your right to call us what you did. I have spent most of my youth serving and protecting and still do and still will be for years to come. It is a choice I made and I do not regret it, but I will not let someone who wasn't there, didn't do that, and never will disrespect those who were without speaking up.

actually he has the right to say whatever he pleases, you yourself fought for that right. whether he's a moron or not for saying or thinking that, is another matter altogether.

and I chose choice number 2. :)
although, if it weren't for my desire to actually complete college because I know I need to do so, I would drop out right now and enlist and be ready to be deployed. I feel that strongly about it. However, that's against my scholarships from ROTC, and most importantly, my contract with the US Army. ;)
regardless, I do not regret any decision I have made and I am glad I am on the track I am. I just am impatient with 4 years of training, to graduate and train some more, then do something. But at least I am getting my schooling done and bettering myself at the same time.

84 IIRC on the ASVAB. I joined the Navy, and enjoyed my 8 years of it. Now I spend my time on a college campus. And I'll tell you this. I'd rather spend my time with 20 people that scored less than 70 on the ASVAB any day compared to 20 college kids that can get a 90+.

Meh. Insult the test all you want, but don't insult the people that had the balls to join.

EDIT: And for the record, I completely agree that the military isn't for everyone. But I'll be damned if I have another college kid think he is better than me, because he has a little piece of paper that mommy and daddy paid for.

Dain-

You can get education in the Military and see things you can get NO WHERE ELSE.

SHould you sign up to be an infentry man? I would say no, but there are other jobs that may suit you. I for one miss my days fixing planes on the flight deck. I got to see Hong Kong, Uapan, singapore, Muskat, and Hobart. I also had a port call in hawaii. SO I had a Fun Job, saw cool things, and the pay sucked. However I was married and soon figured out that in San Diego it took me almost two years after I got out to make what I made in.

If you are single and looking to see and do things you may not do anywhere else take a shot with that score you get to do what ever you want. It may not be for you but then again... ;)

As for thoose claiming the government is just looking for targets - STFU!

Medic,

I'm with you...my 24+ years in the military ends tomorrow. This young disillusioned youth has been on 9 deployments, visited 36+ countries all while learning a trade that will net me a substantial income (already hired on for the start of another career) plus let me bank my entire military retirement.

Oh, yeah...I finished by Bachelor's degree, completed several industry certs and gained invaluable experience.

We just don't listen to the news or read about, we live it.

Those guys that speak so unfavorably of the military are just running their mouths. (I always just consider the source of the comments.)

You take this test in public schools?

You can, yes. I took mine in High School.
At my school, everyone had to take it. Our guidance counselor was nuts about it, insisting that we didn't miss school that day and generally making a big deal out of the whole thing. He made it well known that the test was mandatory and there was no getting out of it.

I got the highest score in my class, but that's not really saying much. Recruiters called me pretty frequently, mostly from the Air Force and the Navy. The Navy wanted me to go to Nuke school and was even calling me after I was in college.

Welcome to the infantry son! Let me tell you about the exciting careers available to someone of your potential. How would you like to be a hyper-velocity projectile impediment? I thought so! Just take this here rifle and no matter what happens... keep moving forward. :D

It's actually quite competitive for infantry officer positions.

Pretty close. I dropped out of HS in my sophmore year and scored a 96 on the ASVAB...then enlisted with a guarantee to go to Vietnam in a Marine rifle company...(0311 baby)
The recruiter said that was one of the EASIEST guarantees he'd written...;)

They said I basically qualified for any job in any branch, as long as I could get the security clearance for it.

I took it before it was dumbed down for the current generation. :p

The ignorance is strong in this thread.

Normally I ould be inclined to pick fights here, but I tend to agree with you folks more each time this comes up.
I just got out of the Navy after 9 years of serice.
Looking back I dont think I actually did anything useful for my country. All I did was help the rich special interest groups become richer. I certainly didnt make the US a safer place or improve life for the average citizen.

Kind of depressing that I swore to uphold the Constitution and my commander-in-chief was a draft-dodger who clearly has no interest in upholding it.
You Republicans can piss and moan about Clinton all you want and cry "PATRIOTISM" till it makes you pass out, by and large things were actually much better for the military when a Democrat was in office. His cutbacks were reasonable and didnt fvck American taxpayers.
One of the reasons I got out was the Navy needed to cut manning from 400,000 to 350,000. I was lucky to escape with an Honorable Discharge and RE1 code.

(Obviously though, I was not in during the Reagan years.)

EDIT: To the folks pushing Nuke School, please keep in mind they have a 90% attrition rate.

Dain:

I spent 6 years in the Navy... finished nuke school, spent time on a submarine. It was 2 years worth of training, so the minimum enlistment for this field was 6 years when i joined 20 years ago. It wasn't easy and I guess I would imagine it's like cramming for a final exam on a daily basis for 2 years straight. Oh but when you graduate, it is an accomplishment definitely to be proud of.

However...my advice to you....before you sign on that dotted line...get the job you want. When I took the ASVAB and got the score I did, all other fields were amazingly unavailable and the nuke program was it. My recruiter treated me like royalty until i agreed.

The military life is not for everyone as previously posted, but their are 4 branches to consider. For me, it was the Navy or nothing else. No one can make the decision for you but I'm more than willing to tell you about why I made my choices way back when if you're interested.
