I got a 99 on the ASVAB, 113 on the DLAB, plus I have a college degree in Microbiology from a state university where I spent the last four semesters on the Dean's list (screwed around when I was younger). I wanted to enlist so I could attend DLI and learn a language in preparation for a career in intelligence. They PDQ'd me for having kidney stones. Bastards. I took the ASVAB with a guy who was struggling to get a 40 I think. He got in just fine.

You take this test in public schools?

Yep. Everyone takes it in my old high school.

When I took it the damn monitor guy kept pestering me. I would finish each of the timed segments with about 1/4 of the allowed time to expire and tried to nap till the next one. A few of the guys around me looked like they were struggling to get it done under the buzzer.

For which service? I understand they score them differently.

I took it at the exact same time as my step-brother. My dad asked us how we thought we did when we were done. I said it was easy, he said it was hard. I got a 92, he got a 29. Yeah, a 29. He really was a stupid son of a bitch.

When I took it, (granted this was 20 years ago), the average score was 54. I got 98. I went in as an AW (Anti-submarine Warfare Operator) ie.. sub hunter.

I got a 98.

What should you do?

A) join the military

B) change your telephone number because they will call you every week for the rest of your life. At least that has been my experience.

Just declare your love of penis and invite the recruiter over to your place. That should solve the problem.

Our country has no shortage of poor disillusioned youth for cannon fodder.
So tell us mister "I'm too good to volunteer to protect the country I live in", what is it exactly you do that is so superior to defending your home? Just because you lacked the balls to serve, you are somehow better? Why did you even bother taking the test in the first place? You sir are an ass. Your snyde comment is an affront to those of us who have served and those who are currently serving in the military. You may disagree with the current state of affairs, but for you to sit there behind your mighty keyboard and belittle the people who have afforded you that right is just wrong.
So I am one of the poor disillusioned youth for cannon fodder after 19 years in the military? Kudos to you for going to school while me and mine bled for you. It is your right. However, it is not your right to call us what you did. I have spent most of my youth serving and protecting and still do and still will be for years to come. It is a choice I made and I do not regret it, but I will not let someone who wasn't there, didn't do that, and never will disrespect those who were without speaking up.

I honorably served as a Navy submarine mechanic for 6 years and I agree with the concept behind jpeyton's statement. The military does not fit everyone's lifestyle, nor should it. It is great there are those who see military service as a useful and beneficial endeavor and I thank you all for your continued service.

I, personally, found the university to be more enlightening and useful in life than my military service but I heavily depend on both sets of experience. My military service was useful at the time to toughen me and provide extreme motivation towards the attainment of a university degree. Currently, my prior military service continues to provide me with a stable foundation that prevents others in my workplace from walking over me.

That must have been tricky, what with your head planted so firmly up your anus.

Just because you qualify does not mean you should enlist. Better think long and hard about what you want out of life. jpeyton might have been a little callous in saying what he said but the fact of the matter is, a certain portion of enlisted soldiers are joining as a last resort, or as a way to make money for college. Of course this is completely different with officers and west point grads and what not. If you're really interested in the military, you shoudl graduate from college and go to officer school.

When I took the ASVAB in 2003, I scored 99th percentile, and had the highest absolute scores of anyone I met when I was at Ft. Benning (even those who also got 99th percentile).

Wouldn't want to do that. I don't want to join the military right now. But if there is some national tragedy and there is a draft, I definitely want to be eligible to help out.

No one said there was anything wrong with going to an institute of higher education, the difference here is you were there and did that. You then made the decision to further your education. I don't know if the "poor disillusioned youth" statement was made due to a sense of superiority or sympathy but, in effect, it was implied that those who join the military are no more than dimwits who can't do any better. It is that to which I take offense. We all know that military service isn't for everyone, but for someone to degrade those who can and do serve, isn't right IMHO.

I know plenty of intelligent people (10 - 15) who could have gone to college but joined the military instead. Most of them did it to pay for their college, but a few did it to serve their country.

Sounds like it is time for a vacation.

Increasing pay while lowering admissions standards...sounds like they're targeting the poor to me.

The other breakthrough is less well known, and has been a long time coming. The army has found ways to lowering its admission standards in order to get all the volunteers it needs. For example, the army allowed up to four percent of the recruits to be of the second lowest aptitude level (Category IV). The percentage of recruits who are high school graduates is now 82 percent, versus 92 percent three years ago. More recruits are being let in on waivers. The most common items waived are medical conditions, criminal records or drug use.
