I just asked my dad how much he thought a performance pc would cost . . .

amol

Lifer
I told him that it would have a big LCD display (20+"), play the latest games at high settings smoothly (Doom3, HL2), record HDTV, and burn DVDs . . .

he answered "$600"

Guess you're getting $600 worth of high performance PC then since that seems to be the amount he's budgeted to you. I have a TNT2 that I'll be willing to sell you for the right price so you'll actually be able to include a 3d accelerator in your rig and still have enough to buy a case and all those other minor little parts, that way you can get straight to some ultra-high speed fragging. Who needs framerates when you have a "performance PC" after all? 😉

SSSHHHH . . . he doesn't know that i'm using some of the money i've saved over the years for a new computer . . .

it's close to $2K :Q

on a similar note, i asked one of my friends who primarily uses Apple computers (Powerbook and single processor PowerMac G5) how much HE thought it would cost . . . he answered $5000!!

JUST BARELY

his current pc (that he and my mom use) is:

HP Pavilion 6730
600MHz Celeron
192MB PC100RAM (it came with 64MB, i pitched in 128MB a couple of months ago)
Intel 810 Chipset
Integrated Graphics
52x CD-ROM (only has room for one optical)
100W PowerSupply
Windows 98 Second Edition
KDS 17" Monitor (they had an HP 15" before, but my dad got a cheapo computer from officemax for his office and he didnt need the CRT, so he put it at home)

i've been offering to upgrade their pc, but they're hesitant

i use it sometimes, it's DEATHLY SLOW at internet browsing and WP

If it's for your parents they don't need a performance PC, as performance is not that big a deal to them if they're still on a celery 600 and he considers $600 to be what he'd be willing to spend. Get the Dell 4700 with 17" LCD for $499 deal and it will both be infinitely better than what they have now and leave you $1500 in your pocket. If you still want to spend it on your parents then get them something else which they value more, take 'em on a week's trip to Ireland for a second honeymoon or something.

well they keep complaining that the internet keeps dropping and that the browser takes forever to load and such

oh, i pitched in on a trip to edinborough, london, brussels, and amsterdam over the summer . . . not fully paid, but pitched in 🙂

i'd love to go to ireland, though . . . i think our next trip will probably be australia

lol, also, it's hard to get them away from work because they both own their repsective businesses, so whenever they're not there, the business is closed and not making money (but still paying the rent)

That i810 Chipset is absolute ass. Thats the main slowdown there.

My PII 400 with a 440BX was faster for general use then my parents Celery 700 with the i810.

People that spend 2k on a computer these days are just stupid.

In 1999 when ram and cpu prices were through the roof.. maybe.. but now people that spend 2k on a computer are just morons..

Are you kidding? A nice, top of the line, but not bleeding edge PC runs about $2k. Some of us like antialiasing, fast load times, etc...

Well that can't be top stuff then. I'd say $2000 without a monitor. I mean, it'll still be a great gaming computer, just not nearly "the best."

Go buy them one of those $200 frys machines.

And as far as spending 2k on a computer. Well, some of us have to I guess. I'm glad I don't.

what goes into a fast fragging PC these days?

<--- hasn't built a new computer since jan 2001

<--- plays doom3 ok
