he answered "$600"

I think your Dad should just stick to Performance PC's ending in .jpg

$600 for just the tower + parts inside tower (ie, no monitor, no speakers) is somewhat doable. Not high performance but solid.

hahah, pci-e version of the 6800 ultras cost that much.

REEALLY? THEY ARE LETTING THEM GO THAT CHEAP?

I saw a guy in for sale sell 6800ultras for $350 each.

Anyways, you said you have $2000 saved up, right? You could build a killer tower with more than enough to get a kick @ss LCD if you really wanted to.

Are you kidding? A nice, top of the line, but not bleeding edge PC runs about $2k. Some of us like antialiasing, fast load times, etc...

2001fp - $550
vidcard - $250-300
1GB RAM - $150
mobo/CPU - $300-400
200GB HDD - $80-90
kb, mouse, etc - $70 MAX

you end up with ~$1400-1500 for a very decent computer that has fast load times and AA.

wut about sound card, speakers, cd rom/dvd rom/cdrw/dvdrw?

...and if this rig is for your parents, and they don't play video games......why on earth would you want to spend $2000 for it? Are you just trying to show off to them that you can build something that high end?

sound card - modern motherboards actually have decent onboard.
throw in $50 for nice set of Sennheiser headphones
throw in $60 for a burner.

i'm going with SATA, no PATA crap

LOL, check the Hot Deals forum...only suckers pay more than $.50 per gig.

The other day I picked up a 200GB drive for $67 out the door after tax.

...and PATA is 99.999% as good as SATA right now.

I just asked my dad who the main characters on the "O.C." were and he didn't know! OMG, my dad is such a moron! LOL!

I don't know why using a computer a lot (especially one that he probably didn't pay for) should imply that he knows what a high performance PC should cost. That's like saying that because a cop drives a lot, he should know how much a new Ferrari costs.

I said "probably didn't pay for" because most engineers' computers are purchased for them by the comapnies they work for. Most engineers don't own the companis they work for.

And still, knowing how much an engineering workstation costs doesn't mean you know how much a gaming PC or whatever should cost.

i just thought it was funny that he said $600 while if you look a few posts under the first, you'll see that a friend of mine thought $5000

That is like your dad going to you and ask you how much you think a 401k would net if rolled over into a ING direct account or how much savings he will net by refinanace his house at prime + 3 percent.

I.E., there is no point to your thread except for mockery and I kinda don't like that, everyone has there place and there abilities. Time for bed.

Must not be - Rossman probably has enough coupons and insider knowledge on hot deals that he could probably pull it off for $600. What a guy...
