$600 for just the tower + parts inside tower (ie, no monitor, no speakers) is somewhat doable. Not high performance but solid.

I saw a guy in for sale sell 6800ultras for $350 each.

Anyways, you said you have $2000 saved up, right? You could build a killer tower with more than enough to get a kick @ss LCD if you really wanted to.

kb, mouse, etc - $70 MAX

you end up with ~$1400-1500 for a very decent computer that has fast load times and AA.

...and if this rig is for your parents, and they don't play video games......why on earth would you want to spend $2000 for it? Are you just trying to show off to them that you can build something that high end?

sound card - modern motherboards actually have decent onboard.
throw in $50 for nice set of Sennheiser headphones
throw in $60 for a burner.

LOL, check the Hot Deals forum...only suckers pay more than $.50 per gig.

The other day I picked up a 200GB drive for $67 out the door after tax.

...and PATA is 99.999% as good as SATA right now.

I don't know why using a computer a lot (especially one that he probably didn't pay for) should imply that he knows what a high performance PC should cost. That's like saying that because a cop drives a lot, he should know how much a new Ferrari costs.

I said "probably didn't pay for" because most engineers' computers are purchased for them by the comapnies they work for. Most engineers don't own the companis they work for.

And still, knowing how much an engineering workstation costs doesn't mean you know how much a gaming PC or whatever should cost.
