:(

Been there and done that 4 times man. I even got laid off one time on Christmas eve and another time after my 3 month probation before getting into the union. They laid off the entire division on my day my 3 months was up. Being laid off sucks. Everthing is going great, making good money and then whamo it all goes to hell. And sucks ffor me because all of the jobs I was laid off from I was just starting to see the light and getting my affairs back in order then right back into the hole again.

Only advise I can really give you is to go get on unemployment right away and get that ball running while you look for another job and dont wait for the finances to be used up. I learned the hard way and its seems kinda demeaning (sp) doing it and having to go into the office and feel lower then dirt but its a big help having some sort of cash comming in and hell you did put some of that money in there incase something should happen so make use of it. It was a big help the time I did it and once I was laid off the other times right after leaving my ex-employer my trip on the way home was to the unemployment office.

Granted you may be able to find a job right away but if your having trouble doing so atleast something is coming in no matter how little it may be. If you have a family may also want to go to the welfair office so that your family can get food stamps and insurance incase someone gets hurt as well or cannot find a job right away. Again you paid into it so may as well use it, its what it is there for.

EDIT just read the above reply and I am sorry that what I wrote cant help you BUT it would hurt to call and ask provided your here legaly on a visa. The worst they can tell you is no right?

That's only true if you are stateside.

Go back to your Country of origin and you should be able to pick that job back up because the U.S. is outsourcing everything overseas.

They let you stay at your desk?

When layoffs come around here, they escort you to your boss for the news, and while you're there, IT comes and logs you off and removes your account, then security walks you back to you desk to get you necessities and they ship you the rest.

Huh? You're giving this guy a  when really, we should be giving you a .

Your works sounds a little harsh when it comes to terminations. Sure, I can understand it if the person is being terminated based on breaking a law and/or policy but for being laid-off due to lack of work? Give me a break!

Actually, that's pretty standard from what I've seen. Disgruntled employees can be very dangerous things. And no matter how "gently" you tell someone that they don't work there anymore, many will become very upset.

Yep, pretty standard from what I've seen - doesn't mean it's not a really crappy way to handle things, though.

And in an IT position, like the OP, they have the power to do some serious damage.

Exactly - "Delete" key FTW! :D

Edit cause I suck at teh quoting.

Get used to it. I got laid off 4 times in a 2 years span.

That's why you have no loyalty but to yourself. They can and will axe you at anytime.

cKGunslinger is right... there have been a few cases where we made exceptions and let the ex-employee return to his/her desk, and it was a mistake every time. It's quite harsh to just escort them to the door, but anything else is just asking for problems.

Everyone else here managed to try to cheer the guy up or offer some relevant advice. Take your tired, useless P&N schtick and shove up your ass, Dave.

heh you haven't been out in the real world long have you?

when you fire/layoff someone you usually have them escorted from the place. while in the meeting (or before) you have the persons passwords changed so they can not get on the system and do damage.

while rare it does happen and company's need to protect themselves.

as others have said what cKgunslinger stated is SOP.

Not really, I'm not an American Citizen yet, and going through immigration for something like that isnt worth the effort.
Hm, I didn't know if you have to be a citizen to get unemployment. Were you an employee or a contractor (i.e. Did your boss withhold taxes?)?

That's pretty standard. At companies where I've worked people who are being terminated are normally called into their supervisors office and told the news by or in front of a member of HR. Then they are allowed to pack their things and escorted out the door. Sad situation, but you just never know how someone will react when laid off or fired. They might start beaking sh*t or trying to take confidential data with them.

At my old company they called it the 'tap and go'. You had a few minutes to put your stuff in a box and you were out the door, they usually had security waiting for you when you got in. Many people in my area got canned in this way, I beat them to it, quit and got a job for a lot more money, later biatches!

So don't fee down OP, you'll probably look back and be thankful it happened. Now go drink some beer!

Pretty much every company I worked for, once they lay someone off, the person immediately get escorted out the door...

I am surprised they let u return to ur desk unsupervised, cuz you can do some serious damage to their network/infrastructure/etc

When our company lays off a office employee, they call them into the conference room to break the news. Since the office staff has company vechicles the custodian loads all their stuff (during meeting) in his truck and drives them home.

I have know the last three times hours before because the janitor cant keep his mouth shut. I was happy when they canned the VP, worthless prick. :)

Custodian claims 14 trips since he has been there 45 years.

Who will drive the custodian home when it is his turn? J/K he is probably the only one with security.

Good luck dude, keep your chin up and find something else (and hopefully something better too!).
