They let you stay at your desk?

When layoffs come around here, they escort you to your boss for the news, and while you're there, IT comes and logs you off and removes your account, then security walks you back to you desk to get you necessities and they ship you the rest.

Huh? You're giving this guy a  when really, we should be giving you a .

Your works sounds a little harsh when it comes to terminations. Sure, I can understand it if the person is being terminated based on breaking a law and/or policy but for being laid-off due to lack of work? Give me a break!

Actually, that's pretty standard from what I've seen. Disgruntled employees can be very dangerous things. And no matter how "gently" you tell someone that they don't work there anymore, many will become very upset.

And in an IT position, like the OP, they have the power to do some serious damage.

I am sure that you will move on to something bigger and better.
For the time being, have some beer and hang out with your friends n family members until you get out of the shock.

Good luck.

That's pretty standard. At companies where I've worked people who are being terminated are normally called into their supervisors office and told the news by or in front of a member of HR. Then they are allowed to pack their things and escorted out the door. Sad situation, but you just never know how someone will react when laid off or fired. They might start beaking sh*t or trying to take confidential data with them.

Sorry about the bad news. There's always going to be something bigger and better down the road.

My company did a little downsizing awhile back and I felt I was going to get axed as well cause business was slow and the amount of helpdesk problems dropped sharply after we upgraded all the computers. Fortunately I made it through and things are looking better now.

Yeah, on the plus side, now is the perfect opportunity to move on to bigger and better things.

If you've got some stable savings - take the weekend to have some fun and blow off some steam, then start your search early Monday AM.

Sorry to hear that. I got laid off in 2004 and at the time I thought it was the worst thing that could have happened to me but it ended up turning out to be one of the best things to happen to me.

Been there...done that...a couple times. You'll bounce back and find a better job. I always did.

Good luck!

Does that apply to slow and debilitating diseases?

I almost got fired once while working as a waitor at Pappadeaux seafood kitchen http://www.pappadeaux.com/ They wouldn't let us eat free there once a day or a week or anything. So me being the 3 month new guy I didn't know how or when to properly seak food out. Anyways long story short, got caught and felt like Sh!t. I had to write a letter just about begging to stay there and that I changed my ways.

Not really, I'm not an American Citizen yet, and going through immigration for something like that isnt worth the effort.

I should clarify. I work(ed) at a home-based company, a very small business. Basically by boss asked me from across the room if I could start finding a different job. Mainly because there isnt a lot of work for our company from the government at this time.

Ah, you'll find a better job man.

In the meantime, write a blog and setup some google ads.
