Do NOT get well done. Jesus Christ. Med Rare/Rare FTW. You want juice. You want flavor. You don't get shit when you get it well done. Except maybe a sole for your new pair of moccasins.

ok so medium sounds like the way to go with the NY cut

I like the idea of going to a reasonably good local steakhouse -- ask your friends. :)

Medium to (maybe medium-well). If you are going to a steakhouse, specify to the waiter a "warm pink center" (no, I'm not joking).

I agree with above posters, if you're seasoning it yourself, rub a little salt/pepper on it, don't do some crazy complicated rub. Oh, and get a choice or prime cut (your local grocery store will probably not have prime but a good butcher will).

eh....... since your mom is a veggie....... does that mean that you were also a veggie and never ate any meat?

If so you may want to start off by just slowly including meat into your diet.

I've had veggie friends who have had bad experiences with just eating meat when they have not all their lives.

Cheers,
Aquaman

get a t-bone if you're going to get a ny strip. it's a strip on one side and tenderloin on the other.

At restaurants when somebody orders a well done steak they give them the worst cut of meat they have because they won't tell the difference after it's burnt to a crisp.

Medium is the most you should do.

One of my favorite hunks of dead cow is prime rib, but you're going to get different answers from different people. New york strip is a nice traditional steak and can be found for a reasonable price. Fillet mignon usually is more pricey but many people think it's the best cut of meat. Rib eye is good but like other people said there's some bands of stuff you're going to want to eat around.

Filet mignon or ribeye
Medium rare on the inside
Pittsburgh black on the outside (ask for this)

It's delicious. If you like it, start dropping the level of doneness on the inside until you decided just how you like it. A well cooked steak is a wonderful treat. A poorly cooked steak is a pain.

dry pat your RIBEYE (IMPORTANT) steak with only salt / pepper (if you want) / garlic powder (i like)
All these other recipes are bullshit - they cover the lovely steak taste

Fire up your charcoal grill (use the park's or a friend's - CHARCOAL > GAS / OVEN / ETC.) - it's your first steak - ENJOY IT
When the coals get hot (gray powder over them), spread them out over the grate, but leave some space on the side without coals

Put your steak on the grill for around 1.5 min
flip it, and leave for 1.5 min
Flip it and rotate it slightly
flip it, and rotate it slightly the other way
this way, you get a good looking diamond shape (feel free to just grill once on each side if you don't want this design)

When the steak is pink/red inside (not just pink throughout the whole meat), take it off the grill and eat it (or let it "rest" as people say for a few minutes to let the juices move in the steak) - MEDIUM RARE

EAT AND ENJOY

Honestly, a nice NY Strip or a Porterhouse will be fine for ya. I wouldn't recommend anything less than medium rare, and absolutely nothing above medium well. If pink meat bothers you, go for the medium well I'd say.

bleh ny strips and porterhouses (ny steak/filet mignon combined sort of) suck compared to ribeye

Rare will have the most flavor. Start with a medium rare and see how you like it. Then adjust to either rare or medium next time if necessary. The longer it cooks, the more flavor is lost, period. Ribeye or filet is a great fir st start. Or a porterhouse is good because it has a lot of meat and you still get the filet part.
