Mac Mini's only have 1 memory slot, but upgrading the memory later might not be a bad idea.
Damn, I had no idea they only had one. Oh well.
Amazing.

When I think what that $500.00 could have bought... sheesh...

Silly old man, don't you know that Dells are, like, totally unfashionable? And so is expandability, performance, and a free 19" LCD? Gawd, you people are, so, like, totally whatEVER.

Nah, not interested. I built myself a gaming PC for about $1,000 two years ago, and it's still holding it's own. I'll probably build myself another one when the next generation Intel CPU's come out, and/or when AMD finally drops the prices on the Athlon FX chips to something reasonable.

This mini is replacing my OLD gaming machine, actually... A really old slot A Athlon 700.

That's not the point. The point is that in any scale of performance, that Dell will club the Mini like a baby seal. And it has a 19" LCD that the Mini doesn't. A 19" LCD, damnit. That's not something to overlook!

I just ordered a Mac Mini on a whim, just to see what all the fuss was about. I always see folks bragging about how great Mac OS X is, so I figured that I'd check it out on my own. So.... besides playing with and learning OS X, what else can I use this thing for? ATOT'ers always seem to come up with good (and weird) uses for hardware, so I thought that I'd hit you guys up for some advice.

Anyway, here's some additional information to help you out:

  • I got the Mac Mini with the 1.42 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, an 80 GB hard drive, WiFi, and BlueTooth. I have a wireless network at home, but I'll probably Ethernet network it to start.
  • I used to fix Macs for a living, so I used to be pretty familiar with them. The last Mac that I used was a 1st generation G4 running Mac OS 9, however, so my Mac skills are a little rusty. I know UNIX, though, which should help me if I need to drop into the command line to fix problems.
  • To be honest, I used to HATE Macs. Both the hardware and software on them were really flaky, although OS X is supposed to fix the software side of that. Personally, I think that my iPod brainwashed me into buying more Apple products 🙂

Anyway, if I get a bunch of cool ideas, maybe I'll make a poll later.

eh duh! Media Center machine/MAME, does OSX have anything that does this? box would look beatiful sitting in living room

Heh, great.... Now I need to get a $2,000 HDTV with DVI input and another $100 for a wireless keyboard and mouse to make my $600 Mac Mini useful 🙂

If you buy one, put the gun barrel in your mouth, then pull the trigger! 😛

Well rumor has it that there might be new ones right around the corner. Macworld is this month, so you may want to hang on for another week or so.
