I have a Mac Mini...

I just ordered a Mac Mini on a whim, just to see what all the fuss was about. I always see folks bragging about how great Mac OS X is, so I figured that I'd check it out on my own. So.... besides playing with and learning OS X, what else can I use this thing for? ATOT'ers always seem to come up with good (and weird) uses for hardware, so I thought that I'd hit you guys up for some advice.

Anyway, here's some additional information to help you out:

  • I got the Mac Mini with the 1.42 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, an 80 GB hard drive, WiFi, and BlueTooth. I have a wireless network at home, but I'll probably Ethernet network it to start.
  • I used to fix Macs for a living, so I used to be pretty familiar with them. The last Mac that I used was a 1st generation G4 running Mac OS 9, however, so my Mac skills are a little rusty. I know UNIX, though, which should help me if I need to drop into the command line to fix problems.
  • To be honest, I used to HATE Macs. Both the hardware and software on them were really flaky, although OS X is supposed to fix the software side of that. Personally, I think that my iPod brainwashed me into buying more Apple products 🙂

Anyway, if I get a bunch of cool ideas, maybe I'll make a poll later.

Edit: I got this Mac Mini 3 months ago, and I like it. So, NO, I'm not going to sell it to ya 🙂

But for reals, you can pretty much do anything you want with that machine. Unless you're a gamer. Even some of the most hardcore Mac followers can tell you that OS X is more geared towards productivity than games.

Edit: Check out the iLife suite of apps that came with the computer. (iMovie, GarageBand, etc)

It's a little bit too big for skeet shooting, but rest assured that I'd make sure to rig something up if this thing dies after the warranty runs out! That video would be awesome! 🙂

Bash yourself in the head with it until the pain teaches you to stop throwing away money on toys you have no use for.

Too small for that - I was thinking doorstop. 😛

But in all honesty, I like Mac's. I'd like to get a powerbook for work and just hang onto this computer for games.

I own several windows machines and one Mac. I use it mainly for the easy multimedia operations. imovie, iphoto, .mac....and F@H too. Unless you are ready to fully switch over, you will find that it has better use a niche item than anything else.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... My orange savings account is already funded for the year, and my 401k is looking OK. I have $650 to blow on a "toy" right now, especially one that will let me put OS X on my resume.
