Sadly, I think that African-Americans have sorely let him down. MLK would turn in his grave at the momentum that exists behind the notion of reparations.

Let's hope not, MLK's words speak of peace and understanding...

I hope everyone can understand what he is trying to say...

Then why was there no mention of the riots after the first one in his later speaches?Do you think maybe he thought it was his way of getting the white man to listen so he ignored them?

Isn't it funny to look back at segregation...... we were so retarded.

I have realitives in a town that was one of the last places to intergrate. The town is about 2000-3000 people, dirt poor, blacks live on one side, whites on the other. More blacks than whites. The schools may be intergrated, but the whites and blacks typically stay apart. Theres a white funeral home and white church, and a black funeral home and black church. Its by choice though as no one forces them to do it, they have just done it. Black or white there a racists on both sides.

You ever been to Alabama...still a tense situation down there.

Have you? I've lived here for 13 years, and I don't see these 'tense situations' you're talking about...

Have you ever been to Alabama?
I've lived in Alabama 12 years...and have seen NOTHING to compare to the racism in Ohio, where I grew up.
In fact, I've made MANY more friends from all types of different ethnic backgrounds than I EVER met up north.

Yep, people still tell me I'm crazy when I try to explain to them how the racism in the Midwest and Southern California is FAR worse than anything I ever saw while living in the South for ten years (SC, NC and GA).

Oh well, stereotypes die hard...

MLK all the way!
MLK, he's our man, if he can't scare the old cracker establishment, no one can!

Good work MLK in helping to change a nation... through a revolution of MOSTLY passivity and non-violence.

Bah. Just another day. He doesnt deserve a holiday.

Dont get me wrong, he did great things. And I wish we lived in a color blind society. But, I dont think in the interest of making blacks feel equal we should make a holiday for one of their speakers. Its not fair to the blacks, and its for damned sure not fair to other great thinkers / doers in society.

My thoughts? Do away with the holiday, do away with Affirmitive Action and do away with color and follow the Pledge. One Nation, under God. Not whites under God. Not blacks under God. Just a nation of free men and women.
