It's wierd that it's just randomly dying. However, netgear doesn't have very good NIC's from my experience and I was told recently that netgear is now a brand to avoid. We are probably going to get a new NIC ourselves. The router has held up fine though.

While you are in configuring the router though, I suggest enabling 64-bit encryption to secure the network. It's very easy to do, all you have to do is type in a passphrase into the router, and then into the configuration of the NIC.

I have been told that Netgear was a good brand, supposably "top of the line products." I will enable the 64 bit encryption. I have one question though. It says to enter the System Name, "(may be called Host Name or Account Name) that is assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider." Do I put the Username in this field? Or WORKGROUP, the Windows Network thingie?

That's if you need to login to the internet. If you are on broadband, you probably don't need anything there. The only thing for my account name is simply the model number of the router, which is probably default and I just never erased it.

Yeah, originally I thought netgear was good. And the router has been fine, no problems. But man, the NIC sucks.

Ok, I wont mess with that. I will do all the settings now, as soon as my sister finishes chatting with her friends. Lol!

At first, I purchased a Linksys Wireless router from Radio Shack for 59 dollars I think. I didnt have a wireless card at the time to go with the router. Then my brother tells me to return the router because he could get a Netgear router and the Wireless card for cheap. And I did, and I guess it was a mistake.

Wooooahhhhhh:D! I've just completed my wireless network with a D-Link router, PCI card, and camera. Took a bit of tweaking of the config programs and a couple calls to tech support, but I've got it working like a charm:cool: D-Link tech support helped a bit and I must say they are good. I've also got all the security measures setup so I'm pretty much set. I wish that the manuals was hard copies instead of on CD, but I guess that's how it's being done nowadays.

Good luck in setting up your wireless network.

Go to your routers configureation setup. Usualy it is done through a web browser after entering the ip address of the default gateway. Find the page that lets you change channels and choose channel 11 since it has the least amount of interferance.

Really depends on his environment.

Yes, that is why channel 11 is his best choice, since it recieves the least amount of interferance. (channel 5 is usualy default)

Thanks for letting me know how your network went. :) I read a lot about D Link, but never thought they were good. D Link is now my new choice. Thanks for your helpful post. :)

My default setting was channel 1. But I changed it to channel 11, and we are waiting to see if it disconnects. I hope not!

Seriosuly make sure you are not using a microwave oven or cordless phone, if you have a cordless phone unplug it for a day or so and see if the problem goes away. With wireless setups there are soo many cause of disruption. This is just the start.

The Laptop is a PC. We just bought a new cordless phone, a GE, but I know its not the problem causer, because the problem was there even when the phone wasnt there.

i'm on wireless all the time. it may be the location of your system from where the router is. wireless is very picky about hot spots.

My sisters room is not that far from the router. Her room is very close. She has the door closed most of the time, but the internet is still connected. But once it disconnects, it disconnects.

it doesnt matter if your sister's room is far or close from the router. the distance from my laptop to my router right now is about 15 ft. even so, moving the laptop a few inches will determine the difference between an "excellent" and "good' connection. factors such as mirrors and such will also make your connection a bit more junky.

Her connection always says Excellent, even if we cant connect to the internet, so it can be quite confusing. But when she is on the internet, she never experiences problems, until it decides it wants to disconnect.

It never says "Way Cool!" or "Groovy"? Only "Excellent"?

Yeah, there definately is something wrong with your WiFi. You need to enable THC protocol. But be careful of other network "sniffers" in the area. Don't ever enable LSD mode though, because if it ever causes a disconnection, it could be permanent.

Lol! One time it said "Radical." :p

Ill keep that in mind. I wont enable LSD mode. Sounds scary! So far, it hasnt disconnected, which is a good thing. I'll enable the THC protocol.

Always RTFM :) BTW I have had a netgear router for 2+yrs and had zero problems so I doubt I will avoid their products in the future unless the quality isn't as good anymore. I use it with a dlink pcicma card, have a 128bit encrypted profile for my wireless network, not that it helps much ;) and have enjoyed over 2yrs of wireless bliss so I got nothin' but love for wireless :) Nothin' like streaming movies over the network to the lappy while BBQing on the breezeway.

this could be part of the problem:

Do you have other wireless networks in the area.

I have the same problem, im assuming its all the people with there own wireless networks causing interference. there are like 4 homes within range and its ticking me off LOL. I dont think you will be able to fix the problem if there is alot of interference. You might want to get an amplifier to see if it helps, if not just return it ;) too many people using wireless things these days, telephones, cellphones, computers, and them Microwave ovens cant be helping things.

im thinking of trying to get everyone together and use one network and share the cost.. lol, just dont know how to go about approching them. Im think to lable my ssid as sharebroadband and my cell number.. see if anyone calls me :)

good luck

I only know one person in my neighborhood that uses wireless internet. I guess an amplifier might be the way to go for now.

Thanks for your reply! :)

Make sure the settings for both the router and the wireless card are the same. I had the same problem, but my router and computer had a different preamble (?) setting. One was long and one was short. Just pick one and see if that works.
