I hate when people tip Starbucks!

Who tips their UPS guy? I do, on occasion, if I have some $1s on me, IF he brings my packages in past the front apt. door, and right to my inside apt. door.

I used to do it more when I lived at my old place, because I was on the 2nd floor. (I order things like DVDs and ATX cases from Newegg. Big and heavy crap.)

In the summer I give him water.

Tip jar doesn't go to company, it goes to the employees who have to deal with Starbucks customers all day.

They deserve it, that hobo outside can't even find a job. Why would I give cash to somebody who won't even try to help themselves?

For < $1.00 I can make 1 gallon of coffee.

Also when you go into Starbucks you are not just buying coffee, you're buying the atmosphere and ambiance. And one cannot always make their own coffee. It's the price of convenience.

I knew someone who went to the same starbucks every morning for coffee. Eventually, after tipping enough, they would get coffee and muffins and stuff for free because they were well known. I think the baristas were getting tipped extra for stealing from the store....but hey, it happens all the time with Bartenders too. Sling an extra drink or two under the table and get an extra $5 or $10 on the tip.

Then why do you keep going back?

I don't go back to the same one after learning they don't employ people with enough braincells to heat some water and run it through some ground beans properly.

However, a lot of people I know seem to enjoy some kind of coffee-esque drink filled with milk, sugar, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and who knows what else.

It isn't much different than a waiter who provides service, and at least the waiter makes more money. Why do you tip a waiter.

It's greatly different. I get to sit and relax at a table while the waiter goes back and forth - gets my drink, brings me a menu, makes sure my drink is refilled when it's getting close to empty - without being asked, brings my food, takes away dirty dishes, etc. The waiter is there to make sure my experience is a good one. Does the barrista come over to your table and refill your coffee, without being asked to?

No one should have to justify why they tip, or why it is any particular amount, most especially when it seems to be erring on the side of generosity. Then again, if one is afraid of being seen as tightfisted, it's easy to see how the altruism of others could appear threatening.

We're not communists here; our businesses need to make a profit, or they go OUT of business.

The barista makes your drink the cashier in a store doesn't make anything. Also cashiers make decent wage. I would tip at fastfood if they had a tip jar. In places that do, I tip.

cashier does his job, gets no tip. waiter does his job, gets tip. barista does his job, gets tip.

at least the cashier and barista are making more than minimum wage, unlike the waiter. the waiter gets a tip for the quality of his service, since it will make or break your dining experience. walking up to a counter and ordering/ paying for something isnt even in the same realm as actual food service. ifucking hate the word barista.

im a programmer. even when i put cool little tidbits or easter eggs that make them laugh in a project i dont get tipped, and that would be considered "above and beyond" IMO

Nearly every time I walk into a Starbucks I see the tip jar overflowing with money, often I see multiple $5 bills.

Do these people not realize that Starbucks Is a multi billion dollar company? DO THEY NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY!?

How about you give that $5 bill to the Homeless guy standing outside!

Don't the tips go to the minimum wage workers and not the multi-million dollar corporation? :\

I rarely go to Starbucks but when I do I might toss my change in that jar but no bills.
