I didn't mind the Italian-American-themed commercials even though they weren't all that authentic... until they pushed it too far and had relatives from Italy going there.
Never been there until last Saturday. Had the lasagna and some of my date's mussels... and liked it.
Enough people complained about the Italian-themed ads that they stopped running them. For the past few years the ads have been whitebread: 100-per cent accurate.
I'll admit I think Buca di Beppo's (which doesn't advertise on TV, giving it an air of authenticity) presentation is more fun (a couple of things offend but I can take a joke). So many details in the décor, and they have the guts to acknowledge the church's place in Italian and Italian-American culture. The food's about the same (great lasagna).
The Olive Garden is 180 Buca: beige everywhere and bending over backwards not to offend any one.
BTW my girlfriend really is what those old Olive Garden commercials depicted - an Italian from New York complete with the accent - and the only things she doesn't like are some of the dishes at Buca ('that's not real!').
