Here's every Olive Garden commercial ever made: "Hey! My big greasy guido wap guinnea family never shuts the f*ck up!! Until someone says 'who's paying the bill?' hurrrrrrrrrrrr. Seriously as an Italian I have NO idea why ANY Italians would eat there. It'd be like running a chicken stand and your commercials consist of black people eating watermelon and dodging child support.
Ummmmm.......... racist post?
I don't see how this is a racist post. He is bringing up a stereotype of italians and how it correlates to italian food. He then compares some southern food (fried chicken) to an african american stereotype and states that you wouldnt see that in a commercial.
He isnt saying the african american stereotype is true, just saying that you wouldnt see that stereotype on TV like the italian one.
Exactly! My dad's from Italy and I remember having this exact same discussion when I was growing up. What really pisses me off is that their motto is "Hospitaliano!" (yes, with the exclamation point included). Which isn't a real word in any language.
Fuck you OG. Your food sucks, your ads are racist, and you're overpriced (at any price).
is the TV show Sopranos racist too? The few times I watched it, there was always a scene with a bunch of mostly fat, Italian dudes talkin loud as hell. Far worse than anything I've seen in a Olive Garden commercial. And I've NEVER seen a person get wacked in one of their commercials.
That's a good point. You could argue they're both stereotypes. The main difference is that the Sopranos is fictional and people know (or at least they ought to know) that it's like that because it just works in the context of the show, not because all Italians are like that. Olive Garden on the other hand really pushes the whole idea that this is what Italian food is and this is what all Italian people are like.
Again, basically replace Italians with any race you can think of. In the context of a work of fiction (a movie or TV show), it's just more acceptable than in an ad. With movies and TV, there's ample opportunity to show things in a more varied or complex light as well.
I will say this, though. Recent Olive Garden ads seem to have moved away from this. I don't watch much TV (pretty much only during football season) but when I last saw OG ads regularly, they weren't just depicting a bunch of Italians sitting around the table, they had white Americans, which seems more in line with their typical clientele.
Also I realize I am probably overreacting and that's bad because I hate it when people overreact to "offensive" things.
