They're both bad. And chances are that he has herpes simplex type I. There are two types of herpes simplex virii:

Also roughly 5% of oral Herpes is caused by HSV-2...

Keep in mind that just because you don't get cold sores doesn't mean you don't have the virus...it's latent in a lot of people. While you can still spread it without open sores, the viral load is extremely low compared to active lesions.

Here's the way herpes works.

It's in the herpes (obviously, along with mono, hiv, chicken pox) family. It is usually dormant, unless your immune system is lowered (typically by stress or a quick weather change). You can only spread the virus while it is "shedding" (meaning while it is actively attacking you). Typically, this means you see signs of infection from it while it is shedding, such as the bump on your lip, BUT YOU DON'T have to...

The good thing about herpes? It sounds weird, but it's one of the better std's to get in that it's very unlikely to cause real harm, even less so then the curable ones. Soem odd 60% of the people who get it never have an outbreak (their immune system is too high). Of the remaining 40%, only 50% of those have more then 1 outbreak (think chicken pox, but it's stronger... once you have it, you develop antibodies, but you CAN still get it again... only if your immune system drops.). With each outbreak, your chances of reoccurances drop.
