Bad sh*t happens to good people and arseholes can and do prosper.

A simple "I am not interested" is sufficent. Perhaps his pissy attitude was more of a response to your attitude.

On a side note:

You remind me of my Mother.

On her first visit to the US we took a train to a local city.

While waiting at the train station I was approached by an elderly lady who was obviously living on the street.
She asked me if I would help her on the train with her bags and I said yes sure let me know when you are ready to get on the train.
My Mother looked horrified.

I did not know this ladies life story, whether she put herself on the street by making bad decisions or life just wasn't kind to her.
At that point you ask yourself whether it really matters.
I helped her.

Once on the train my Mother dragged me to another car and pushed my head down while handing me wet clothes so I could 'clean' myself. She thought this person would come looking for me and try to 'latch on'.
She did look for me and my Mother continued to push me down so my head couldn't be seen.
I still don't understand her reasoning.
It may have been that this lady was just responding to a good deed and someone who treated her like a human being.

I think you guys are taking it to hard on Jerboy. I don't see why he can't have his own views and post on ATOT? I myself don't have much compassion for people who don't try hard but it's not for me to make judgement so I just ignore them for the most part. When I see someone I feel is working (picking up cans, looking for stuff in the garbage, etc), I give them money w/o them having to ask. I give because I've been blessed to have a nice job and decent life. Anyhow, I think Jerboy is entitled to his POV/opinion.

Of course he can have is own views. However, when every single post he makes is a whining, useless thread, it gets old pretty fast.

Yes he is entitled to his opinion. And he's entitled to your's too ;). I hope he (and others) could be more merciful on the disenfranchised and adopt more appreciation and thankfulness for one's own blessings, and give back to those who have lost these things or never had them.

The other version of the scroll :D

Is that really a picture of jerboy or is that Sean Hayes from Will and Grace?

Also, do people still use walkmans these days? I thought they were outdated with people using portable mp3 players or cd players.

You should have said:

"Hey, that's my walkman!" and see how fast he runs the other way.

Here in Houston, they just passed a law that makes it illegal to ask for handouts, though it hasn't stopped them. I walk downtown Houston everyday and get asked at least once a day for money. I usually just ignore them.

I was tempted once to give money to a homeless person just for his honesty. He was holding a sign that said:
"Please help, need beer"

Now if he said he had an mp3 player that had 64mb of ram, diplayed id3 tags, and had usb 2.0 support, then yes perhaps it was stolen. :D

Here's your cookie, Jerboy. You're obviously above this person because your mommy and daddy have money and you've led a life free from anything other than the burden of your own choice. Hopefully for your sake, the day when the last shall be first and the first shall be last is far away...

There are multiple reasons why people become homeless.
True, but by far the MOST common reason is drunkeness, drug addiction, antisocial personalities, or schizophrenics who REFUSE to stay on their medications because they don't like them. Most bums and transients, if you actually talk to them, will admit they cannot hack it in society for one reason or another and they have no desire to "re-enter" society. I've known several people like that. They're not going to tell you that if they think you're some bleeding heart fool who will give them a couple bucks in return for a really sad story, then they'll really pour it on.

The bums and hobos of the 40's and 50's LIKED being bums and hobos because they equated it with 'freedom'. No 9 to 5 crap, no family, no bills, no boss, no one telling you what to do, no societal 'expectations', plenty of suckers who will give you a hand-out, etc. It would be really stupid to believe this motivation is no longer found among transients and bums.

There is help for those people who want it, plenty of help from public and private sources. If they're homeless for too long, it can ONLY mean they refuse to help themselves. You cannot help anyone who will not help themselves.

Wow $25 for a $200 walkman... Looks like a hot deal. Of course, the legitimacy of it is an entirely different question... I wouldn't pick the player up b/c I already have 3 of them :). The only one I need is a good mp3 player. Did you ask that guy his phone number? Maybe he has a selection of el cheapo mp3 players w/proof of purchase? I'd like that.

What does "addicted to store property" mean?

When he learns that this particular store property has more people to give him money than anywhere else, he'll get addicted to that store property.

Is that anything like when you learn that your parents will give you more money than anyone else and you get addicted to your parents?

I voted "get him in trouble", but NOT because he is a transient. If anyone came up to me offering what I conclude are stolen goods and I had a cell phone, I'd try to get them in as much trouble as possible.

Jerboy, I would of thought that you of all people would have some compasion for someone that does not necassarily comform to society norms. You are perpetuating the very same type of ignorant additude towards this guy as much of the ignorant world has towards gay people. It is called intolerance. Intolerance is generated through fear and ingnorance of the unknown. How can you ever expect exceptance of yourself by others because you are different, if you cannot find acceptance of others that are different. Look in the mirror.

I would have told the guy no thanks, I didn't need a walkman. Then I would reach in my pocket and hand the guy a few dollars just because I could. I could care less if he was going to spend it on cigs, alcohol or drugs. I don't feel the need to qualify a good deed.

its difficult to get a job WHEN YOU DONT HAVE A HOUSE LET ALONE A PHONE!

I don't have a problem with most transients. I don't usually give them change, since I don't usually carry any around. But, I smoke, so I'll usually give them a cigarette or two. Anyways, back in Seattle a few weeks ago, this one guy just got really annoying. The conversation sorta went like this:

Bum: Hey, got an extra cigarette?
me: Sure, need a light?
bum: Nah, but I could use some money.
me: Sorry man.
bum: No, seriously. I could really use some money.
me: Sorry.

so, I start walking away (with my g/f and bro), and the bum starts following us, saying he really needs money. Walks the whole block, trailing us until we get to our car. Then, after we get in, he stands behind the car (we're parallel parked), so I sit there for a couple seconds, until he finally walks away. Not sure what I would've done if he'd stayed there. If I'd been in my old '81 datsun 510 station wagon, maybe I would've accidentally nudged him. ;)

disclaimer: I'm joking about the nudging thing. It's wrong to hit people with a car. Well, most of the time, it's wrong... :)

I got approached by a transient :|
How does one recognize a transient just by looking at him?

Could this talent be expanded to rapists, murderers and terrorists?
