I also work retail!!!! The retail environment is great, it's like high school without the homework. There are the nerds that work in computers, the jocks that work in merchandising, the cute girls that work as cashiers, etc.

Another great benefit is you get to hog all the clearance stuff that people bitch and moan about on slickdeals.

The only thing is, I work retail for fun. I do have to work a real job to pay the mortgage.....8 bucks an hour + house payment/property taxes/utility/cable/cell/insurance do not compute.

Then... is there any particular reason that after 7 years you haven't applied for a management position?

+ after 7 years only rising to $8.50.

A grocery store cashier makes $12.50/hr+ and they are looking for slightly older people to take on that role.

how about some adventure?

Go work the fishing boats out of Unalaska and its port, Dutch Harbor, in Alaska's Alutian Islands.

http://www.alaskatrekker.com/dutch.htm

I just got offered a job up there, when you break it down its a pretty bad deal. By the hour for a greenhorn is probably $8, could be slightly more or less, so its not even guaranteed. And you don't get to sleep in your bed at night and its 18 hour days.

That's assuming you get flown up there and back. Flying your own way to Dutch Harbor is expensive. You're lucky to break even if you just fly up there looking for work.

OP, you're going to have to take some action and do something with your life if you're not happy where you're at. Here are a few options:

1. Join the service -- you'll get money for school and may get to see the world.
2. Apprenticeship -- you can look in to something like being an electrician or plumber. You can make more money as one of those than most college graduates make, particularly if you go out on your own.
3. Go to school and get a degree -- hard if you don't have money, but you can get the money with option #1 above or by taking multiple jobs (harder).

I've been trying to decide my next step as well. I have a BS in EE and was getting close to an MS in EE when I decided I just didn't enjoy it. I tend to think an MBA is probably the next logical step, but I have concerns that it really won't help me move up based on the sheer numbers of unemployed or underemployed MBAs. I don't want to invest time and money in something that won't matter one damn bit. My big mistake was not getting it while at my last company, which had 100% tuition reimbursement with no yearly maximum. My current company has a yearly max. :(

Have you ever considered blue collar work? Try some warehouses. I'm sure you could get a job at a wal-mart distribution center. I think they start at $12 a hour and you get bonuses depending on how much shit you do. Just start applying at places. Factories, warehouses, loading docks, etc.. You'll get on somewhere if your serious. Be prepared to bust your ass till you get some experience and skills. If you list the area you're in I'm sure some atot people could list some places that you could find work at. Hell maybe even truck driving school. No reason you should be broke and living at home. You can pull yourself out of this mess. I was a fuck up that went to prison at 18 years old. I vowed to myself I'd fix my life when I got out. I just found a fucked up bust your ass job and worked my way up. I'm doing very well for myself and I have no doubt you could do the same. Time to get it in gear. Good luck man.

You sound like you have finally started to change your attitude, that's the first step. Obviously your attitude, work ethic, or both is lacking. I have never seen any retail chain that doesn't at least promote to assistant manager from within without a degree. With 7.25 being minimum wage and you only making 8.50 says their is something wrong in those areas. If you are anywhere close to a decent sized city a job for $10 an hour isn't that hard to get if your willing to work.

My suggestion is join the service. If you don't have money going to school is hard. I imagine your parents are tired of supporting you by now and aren't going to foot the bill. Sign up for four years. Either try and get a job that will translate to civilian life or go to school with the GI Bill when you get out. Do some time in the right job and you can get out and find a job making serious dough.

I'm too old to try it now, unfortunately (nearly 40). Honestly, I don't think I would've liked it but I wish I would've at least investigated it a little more when I was about to graduate from high school. I should have also looked more closely at finance as well.

As it turned out, my two choices boiled down to Electrical Engineering or pre-med. I chose EE because 1) I'm a geek at heart and always will be and 2) I wasn't sure I'd be dedicated enough to go through college, med school, residency, etc.

My senior year in high school I got accepted to electrical engineering school and biology school. I did well in both math and science, but i hated my calc teacher...so I went into to biology lol

You should feel like a loser, because you are.
Now do something about it. 27 isn't too late, it's far from too late.

Ouch, that was a bit rough, especially coming from you. Tough love?

OP, you mentioned that you can't even live on your own ... is it safe to assume you still live with your parents? If you are looking for motivation to get up off the floor and make a change look no farther then your parents. Imagine how they must feel watching you squander your youth.

It was exactly that.

You're 27 and only working 20 hours a week. Why don't you go to school? You are young enough and should be able to balance work with school pretty easily.

Have you considered drug running? It doesn't pay as much as it used to but you can still make enough money for college. Sure you can get beheaded or set on fire but you won't be working at Target.

As an aside, I remember when a job paying $12.50 an hour was considered a really good position. Man, do I feel old now. D:
