my exwife always put my sks next to her side of the bed when i traveled for work. she felt better about being alone, and she was a very good shot. we had a perv maint guy in that apt complex, he decided to come in for a repair while she was sleeping. he stepped into our room to be met with the barrel in his face. he was supposed to be fixing the kitchen vent. scared the hell out of him, and he eventually got fired for it.

i sleep with my kabar next to me. wife thinks im nuts. its within reach if anyone breaks in i guess. is this pathetic?

anyone else keep knives or bats around for protection? i am hopefully geting the shotgun next weekend.

Getting shotgun only?
You should get anti-aircraft radar system...what, if some arab terrorists would want to crash some hijacked airplane into your house? Didn't you think about? It's very dangerous...

And by US means, you're perfectly(almost) normal, just check(American Health Association), how many in US have paranoia - more % than % of votes Obama got elected...

And me? "NORMAL PEOPLE WORRY ME" - I saw that once on a bumper sticker and I like it...

I don't have a gun, but if I did it would probably some sort of revolver. I'd leave the first chamber empty so I wouldn't accidentally fire it into my head when frantically grabbing it. If there's a semi-auto that I could do that with, though, that would be my first choice.

I laughed so fucking hard.

A knife if pretty pathetic. If you can't have a gun a baseball bat or a nice piece of pipe is a nice companion.

Have you ever handled/shot a gun?

There is no need to sleep with any kind of weapon. No need for gun, bat, knife, or anything else.

FYI a gun is 100X more likely to kill your own children than a stranger.

Ruger .44 semi-auto carbine, a gas mask, and some fumigation bombs.. the rest is classified.
A replica Cutlass is much better than a machetti

Some people fear knifes some love them. Soldiers preferred a folding shovel with sharpened edges most times and places..

When I move into my apartment I'll be keeping a Springfield Lightweight Champion Operator 1911 in a holster strapped to my bedframe in condition 1 (don't have a nightstand, covered up by bedspread during the day).

Considering that if someone breaks in they probably did so with an instrument (crowbar, bat) of some kind, a knife might not do you much good. And I wouldn't willingly go into a knife fight unless I had zero other choice. I'd literally jump out the window first. Just not worth the odds, especially in the dark.

Certain British posters would even invite them to the kitchen for some tea after they rape their family.

Yep. As Hal's repeatably stated, he takes the long view of a gun free earth, and if it takes the sacrifice of himself and his family to help achieve that then so then so be it.

I'll just throw a cat or two at the intruder. There are always at least four on the bed.

If I lived somewhere where I feared for my life while I slept, I would move. Fuck that.

In my area (town of ~32,000) we had 163 burglaries, 47 robberies in 2009. The odds of my being one of them are extremely low, already lived here for 5 years without serious incident, but they're there. I don't fear for my life, but I'm prepared. I would say "because I'm prepared" but a lot of people would twist that into "OMG SURVIVALIST!!" which I am decidedly not.

What if I don't have any children?

It sucks that all of you people have to live in such bad neighborhoods that you feel your life is in danger every time you go to sleep.

I own 13 guns and none of them are in the room my wife and I sleep in.

Your wife is right...you're nuts.

So you own weapons, but not a single one of them is within reach when you get that unwanted intrusion in the middle of the night? What, you're going to scamper around the house and hope you get a chance to reach a weapon if it ends up being necessary?

I don't own any weapons (other than a basic knife), but I think the whole point of them would be to keep at least one good home-defense handgun where you sleep.

Who says good planning has to be related to a feeling of immediate danger?

If I lived alone in my current neighborhood, I wouldn't fear a B&E, but I'd conduct contingency planning regardless. If I think it is at all possible that violence may happen, I'd like to be prepared.

Better to be prepared for a situation and never experience it, than to never prepare for a situation and have to cower like a bitch when it actually happens.

I live in a very low crime area, last year we had 1 murder and he was killed somewhere else and dumped here. It's also a pro gun and pro hunting area(schools are closed on the first day of deer season) so criminals understand that the chances of facing a home owner who is armed is very high

You don't think discharging a firearm in your house and putting a hole or two in someone is traumatic? Or messy? Or horrific?

I've never killed anyone. Hopefully, I will never have to.

Honestly, I keep my guns under lock and key because I don't want my son or his friends finding one of them and having something horrific happen to either of them. I'd rather be killed by an intruder than have that happen.

Good job raising your kid. How about teach him firearm safety??? Hiding and shielding kids from guns only makes them more prone to screw with it if they find one. Teach them early that a gun, like the internet, is serious buisness. Make sure they understand the consiquences of using a gun improperly.
I've tought my 9 year old autistic daughter that will grab anything and play with anything that moves, not to handle a firearm. I've routinely tested her with leaving toy guns out and watching her reaction to them and she just passes by them. She's severely autistic and is of the lowest functioning kind, so I hope you have more confidence in your child than you seem to give him.
My 7 year old has gone shooting with us and knows 1st hand what a firearm can do to people/things. Even though you own firearms it seems like you fear them. A firearm can't do anything wrong. Only the person weilding it can.
In the OP's case, I'd much rather shoot someone than get in a knife fight with them.
If you are in a position to stab someone they can do the samething. I've seen 1st hand how nasty knife wounds can be and I'll take getting shot over being stabbed, slashed by a knife any f'ing day. You actually have a beeter chance of surviving a handgun shot than you do being slashed and stabbed by an attacker.

It's sad that people don't understand that crime happens everywhere.
It doesn't matter if you are in a good neighborhood or not.
If you live in a "good" neighborhood, theives are going to be targeting that area because there's better loot.

My rifles and one pistol are locked up in safes (pistol in my closest, rifles in the basement) but I keep a loaded mag and my .40 cal P226 in the handgun case in my closet.

Lived here for 28 years (off and on) and never had a break in. But if I have the gun, what not keep it there? No little kids to worry about either.

I agree.
Many people who don't take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their loved ones often think this way.
