My wife tells me that she always wanted to own Frye Boots. I said that that's fine and gave her a budget of $250-$300. So she spent days looking on the internet for a deal on the boots. The model she wanted cost around $250-300.

She calls me couple of days after and tells me that she got an awesome deal on the boots and how much she saved.

Wife: Guess what?
Me: What?
Wife: I found the boots I wanted at a great price.
Me: Cool, how much was it?
Wife: It's only going to cost us $150 for the boots, I saved $100.
Me: (proud), Good job babe, that's great.
Wife: Yeah! Since I saved $100 on the boots, I spent $150 to buy 2 other pairs of shoes.
Me: ???
Wife: Isn't it great? I'm so happy!
Me: ???
Wife: Are you there?
Me: Wait, so you saved lot of money on the boots, so you spent it on more shoes?
Wife: Yeah.. I ordered another pair of boots and shoes. I can't wait.
Me: (no so proud), Good job honey, I gotta go..

Seems that I am not the only one with this question.
I am finally over it. Thinking back, I've gotten something that I probably don't deserve.

I do love her, I will be happy for her. Gonna do my best to get some tonight.

The problem here is that you gave her a budget. She had $300 to spend and she spent it. In her mind, the $300 was fixed and was going to be spent regardless, so, by getting 3 pair of shoes for that $300 she got the most from the allotted budget.

You, on the other hand, assumed that she would buy only the one pair of shoes and see the extra $150 spent as money down the drain.

This is actually an interesting object lesson in how budgets typically work. People will seek to spend the entire budget rather than have some left over, so even if they find a great deal on what they initially wanted the money for, they will still find ways to spend the entire amount.

What you should have done was given her the OK to get just that pair of boots without attaching a budget to it.

There are a few other things though.

Does she work, or just the OP?

She asked to buy a pair of shoes, and OP gave her a budget for that. Then she got 2 other pairs on top of that.

Granted I can't entirely say OP should be mad because she stayed within her budget of $300 that was given to her.

$250-$300 budget for BOOTS? For what, a Mormon's entire extended family??????

Frye Boots - I think I feel a little sick now. The site has a "Fall 2008 collection." Yes, because we need to buy new cars and clothing every year to keep up with the "fashion" that the industry says we should keep up with.

Wow... I gotta say, my wife is definitely smarter than that....

Wife: "Honey! I saved $150 dollars on the boots!"
Me: "Awesome!"
Wife: "That's another $150 for groceries!"
Me: "I love you."

Granted, we haven't spent more than $40 on ANY pair of shoes... but still.

she got 3 pairs for the same budget she had for 1, she is saving money.

I didn't step into L&R by accident again did I?

You can't get a good pair of athletic shoes or dress shoes for under $50.00 and thats on sale.

You just don't know where to look. New Balance 472s... $40. Best athletic shoes I've ever owned. I have 3 pairs... still wearing the 1st after 2 years. I bought the other two in case the style gets discontinued. My dress shoes are very nice and I bought them for $35. Just bought my wife some winter boots for $39. These are all very nice, very comfortable, and very durable shoes. Some people just don't know how to get a good deal without sacrificing quality.

Uh, you gave her that budget...

For a pair of boots.. not a pair of boots plus extra.

Women are stupid.

You've never dealt with an office budget, have you. If a department has extra budget money at the end of the year because they've been frugal, they don't just give that money back, they find a bunch of junk to spend it on.

This is exactly the normal response to being given a budget; there's nothing unique to women here.

We both work, but she makes twice as much as I do.
We have an agreement that any individual purchases over $100 needs to be agreed by both parties. We've been married for 9 years with no problem with our finances. It's just that I got confused with her logic.

I'm confused with YOUR logic.

Why did you say you "gave" her a budget, when you both agreed to a budget? Is your ego that fragile?

If you gave me a $300 budget for PC parts, I would buy a mobo/cpu/ram if I could find the parts cheap. Although come on, PC parts are actually useful!

I've never understood why they need 50 pairs of shoes...

Personally I see nothing wrong with her logic. This means more savings for you later down the road........weeelll Ok maybe not.
