If you're legal now, the citizenship process isn't challenging, it's long, tedious and involves lots of finding and reading forms, but it's possible for a literate person to do it themselves.

my grandfather immigrated from Mexico to Laredo, TX. i honestly have no idea if he came here legally or not. he married my grandmother who was born in Laredo and had 7 daughters..
they moved to san antonio in the late 1930s/early 40s and raised them all on a airplane mechanic's salary. most of my aunts even went to private school.
it was tough, they were poor but loved each other and they made it. our expanded family counts over 100 now. we range from blue collar workers to computer programmers to lawyers to a vice president of a bank.
it is the dream of parents to see their children/grandchildren do better than they did. this is true if you were born in America or anywhere else in the world.
That's not what I'm perceiving. People are annoyed that he's complaining about 1000 bucks a year saying how expensive it is when he's using a 3000 dollar computerOriginally posted by: chusteczka
OP, it is obvious your family is hardworking. I believe you are receiving a hard time from the people here because they are not able to earn the amount your family is earning at the moment. Many Americans believe they are entitled to a larger salary and easier life than their parents earned. These same Americans are often highly influenced by pop-culture and are lazy, television watching, couch potatoes that do not understand the professionalism and hard work required of immigrants such as your family.

But you have a hot daughter. That means even if you came here illegally, it's okay. It's okay as long as you are somehow involved in creating hot looking girls for the future population of the US.

You guys have to admit, 10,000 is a lot...
It's not that much, when you have a family that makes $70,000 a year.

Its a lot when that $70,000 pays for school, transportation, food, RENT, utilities, etc. If a member of the family had a serious medical problem, they'll be out of that $10,000 easy as I assume they don't have insurance either.
gersson: your family has SSNs? maybe you can apply for a private loan?

We have SNN but my parents have crap credit and I have none!
ViviTheMage, I am completely in favor of border enforcement. A fence is not as good as having MANY border agents -- more even than what the president is asking.
Polls show most Americans are in favor of border enforcement. The issue is what to do about people like me or people who are altogether illegal.

There is something I don't understand. Your need to show us that you have had it hard in this country. I understand the need your parents had to come here illegaly. My mother passed her CFGNS and her TOEFFL, she came here and found a sponsor and brought my family here when I was 14. Mind you, for the first year or two while her immigration petition based on labor all we had was a work permit. My parents build a credit history through hard working. My mother got treated like sh!t when she started working here because she was the new and foreign nurse and not making too much money for a nurse (and she couldn't quit because it was her sponsoring company) and my father (who was still learning english) found a construction job that would pay him 10 bucks/hr. In a year, my father moved up really quickly and became friends with his boss really quickly. Now he is a partner in the business. After the petition was accepted my mother quit and is working now in a doctor's office. In the second year, they bought a house because they knew renting sucked (even though they also started with zero credit when they came). The next year they bought their first new car and they have been going up from there. I finished high school with a good GPA and being an AP Scholar. Now you all in ATOT may think that being an AP Scholar is nothing but believe me that when you come to this country at 14 knowing almost no english and graduating at 17 being fluent in english with honors and also an AP Scholar, well...it feels damn good! I am now 20, a college student, a junior, finishing my degree in Computer Science while working 36 hrs doing software development to to get experience and pay for my tuition. I will finish this degree and start working full time and also go ahead and get my masters, most of my money will go to help my parents and pay my sister's tuition (who is going to college to study law).
I know immigration fees are high and a pain in the ass to pay. The immigration system in this country sucks, starting with the fact that an application can stay in the shelves of some immigration agent waiting to be approved for ages before it is. I believe that should be changed first, the long and unsufferable waits that tend to kill the hope of many hard worker immigrants.
I was not trying to brag with this post though, I was just trying to show you that it doesn't matter if you came here legally or illegally(although I know it helps when you are legal), it's going to be hard in the end. However, only being educated, making wise decisions and working hard will get you ahead in life.
I hope everything works out for you and your family

wow. That's quite an accomplishment. Personally I believe I have let my parents down for not pursuing college studies...but I will start this year. You are an inspiration.
