I'm sorry, but this sounds like a load of crap. You have a nice rig, you live in miami, your family makes 70k a year combined, you don't have a car or other expenses and yet you had to forgo christmas because you owed $1000 in fees? Did your parents waste all their money on blow?

I understand how you can come to that conclusion.

However, for the sake of brevity I didn't make a 100 page essay. 2 yrs ago we were really down on our luck. My father couldn't find ANY work and I also had a hard time finding and keeping one.

My father is self employed. Some years are better than others. Some can be downright miserable.

You guys have to admit, 10,000 is a lot...

70k from entering the country illegally and you're bitching about the citizenship fees? Give me a fvcking break. That makes me SICK

It's not that much, when you have a family that makes $70,000 a year.

But we have a lot of debt to pay off. Living here is not cheap. 300 a week on gas, 850 rent, 230 a month elec, 100 car insurance, 200 groceries, 100 internet and CTV (ok, that's extra, I know :D) and on and on.

1000 a week is not that much. Keeping in mind we work 6 days a week and every week -- no vacations.

after reading this thread it makes me think that the government will try to capitalize big time on the immigration issue with all the fees, i'd say that when choosing who becomes a citizen its more important to take into account how productive they can be in our society rather than how much they can shell out right off the bat

I notice. I think some people are giving me a harder time than warranted.

I'm not bitching about living here. That was my number 1 fear when I made this post but I just wanted to talk about something on my mind.

This is my best year ever. Other years have NOT been good. But I'm not whining. Part of life.

Sell your computer, sell your television, cancel your internet, and get rid of all of your other extras and then you may have a point.

You act like spending any money at all is bad. Well you have to here. Unless you don't live materialistically

bahh. I will sell if I have to but I wont have to. Forget the paying 10000 for citizenship, deal. I know we can save up for it easy. Just mentioned it. I'm glad to someday be a citizen.

(Not being an a$$ at all, honestly curious)

I dont justify them coming here illegally. They were prob very impatient but most likely cos they were dirt poor when they were 1st married.
I'm sorry I hadn't noticed you asked :)

Excuse me, if you bothered to read what I've been posting, you would have noticed that its not the attitude I take @ all. How did you arrive @ that conclusion? Did you PRE-Judge my statements before reading them?

Use that computer as an educational tool, overclock it and learn how the various components work together. Obtain a spare hard drive and play with, work with, and learn linux, FreeBSD, and Sun Solaris system administration so you may earn system administration certification. Then learn about filesystems and networking. All of this can be accomplished on your own with a library and without school. Read all the computer books your library has then look for more on the internet. Many such books are provided free, legally. If you are able to go to school, then concentrate on math and computer science. If you are able to graduate with a degree in computer science then you will relieve the stress from your parents with the knowledge their son has the means to provide for the family. It is now your turn to provide for your family and your future family. I am unable to help with the immigration situation even though I wish I could do more than stick up for you and other immigrants.

2K per person for citizen fee? I am glad that I am a naturalized US citizen over 10 years ago. I think it was less than 100 bucks for the whole test/fee.

I like your way of thinking. But I may try to get a general construction license instead.

Before my story, 2 things.

I am humbled to be able to now legally work here, and my parents aren't the brightest people...

In 1989, I was 5 yrs old. My father was 28 and my mother 24. My crazy brother was 3

-I came here from a San Pedro Sula, Honduras slum.
-Everyone is always talking about America this, America that in central america. My parents figured that they'd try making the journey over here.

As of 1997, I am here legally, can work here, go to school, pay taxes, etc. But it is only a work permit.

My parents are otherwise law abiding people who pay taxes and work honestly (contruction and cleaning -- surprise!)

Given recent events, I began to think about the morality of granting illegal aliens and other non residents a path to citizenship.

Funny thing is I think that I shouldn't get automatic citizenship for coming here illegally!

I think it's morally incorrect to reward bad behavior. On the other hand, man I would love to be able to be here permanently. I couldn't imagine living in Honduras after English is basically my primary language (my spanish is not as good since it's not taught in school).

I'm 23 now and my bro is 21. He's more typical of the issue -- gimme! Another factor is I have another brother who was born here. He's a smart kid; age 14. He speaks spanish like a puerto rican (hard to understand!).

To be able to be here legally, I have to pay 250 every year. Multiply that by 4 and that's a grand! That's a lot of money for my family. Actually 2 Christmas ago was really sad since we gave up presents in order to pay (I got a box of CD markers...still going strong!)

There are plans for a citizenship fee of $2000 ... steep for us.. that's $10,000 for my family! I woulnd't call that amnesty that's for sure!

:Q

Anyway, this is getting long. Ask questions as you see fit. I just wanted to tell a story. I know some people here have some strong opinions about illegal immigration and such. Hope I can add a bit to the considerations.

Um. Yet you have a computer that's probably worth several thousand dollars, and you can't afford to pay your immigrant status?

What's wrong with this picture?

$1000 dollars a year for your family to stay here is not "alot" especially when youre buying 4000 dollar computers, which is apparnelty a little under 50% of your yearly earnings. $10000 dllar for citizenship is not a lot considering your family can live fine with your mom and dad's salary, meaning your salary can then be used to pay for citizenship of the family. either way, your excessive comptuer shows money is not a problem in your home
