Before my story, 2 things.
I am humbled to be able to now legally work here, and my parents aren't the brightest people...
In 1989, I was 5 yrs old. My father was 28 and my mother 24. My crazy brother was 3
-I came here from a San Pedro Sula, Honduras slum.
-Everyone is always talking about America this, America that in central america. My parents figured that they'd try making the journey over here.
As of 1997, I am here legally, can work here, go to school, pay taxes, etc. But it is only a work permit.
My parents are otherwise law abiding people who pay taxes and work honestly (contruction and cleaning -- surprise!)
Given recent events, I began to think about the morality of granting illegal aliens and other non residents a path to citizenship.
Funny thing is I think that I shouldn't get automatic citizenship for coming here illegally!
I think it's morally incorrect to reward bad behavior. On the other hand, man I would love to be able to be here permanently. I couldn't imagine living in Honduras after English is basically my primary language (my spanish is not as good since it's not taught in school).
I'm 23 now and my bro is 21. He's more typical of the issue -- gimme! Another factor is I have another brother who was born here. He's a smart kid; age 14. He speaks spanish like a puerto rican (hard to understand!).
To be able to be here legally, I have to pay 250 every year. Multiply that by 4 and that's a grand! That's a lot of money for my family. Actually 2 Christmas ago was really sad since we gave up presents in order to pay (I got a box of CD markers...still going strong!)
There are plans for a citizenship fee of $2000 ... steep for us.. that's $10,000 for my family! I woulnd't call that amnesty that's for sure!
:Q
Anyway, this is getting long. Ask questions as you see fit. I just wanted to tell a story. I know some people here have some strong opinions about illegal immigration and such. Hope I can add a bit to the considerations.
