I believe about gas prices....

Can't we consolidate these threads into one "I have a theory about oil" where we can just eliminate all "theories" and get down to the real problems? Too many uneducated people out there who don't bother looking for older threads on oil where all of these "theories" are already debunked.

It's the cost of heating oil and the added cost to consumer goods due to transportation costs that is tough. Also petroleum based products like tires are really spiking in price.

Find me a small car that will allow me to carry my 6' paintings around and I'd be happy to switch. Oh, wait, my car is worth about $2 now because it gets 15mpg.

Yes, I am one of the few that needs a larger vehicle, much to my dismay.

Big Oil companies making record profits over the last few years and then saying "it's not us" just doesn't sound right to me...

Then you have to deal with it, or find another way to cart around your paintings.

It's not the "big oil companies" and their profits aren't really any more than they ever were.

If you have two companies, each making $100 and a profit of $10 and combined them, they now make $200 and $20. Did their profit double?

If you have another company who made $100 last year but their "goods" cost them $90 to buy, they had a 10% profit margin. If their cost doubles to $180, do you expect them to sell it for the same amount of $100 and take an $80 loss?

No, they turn around and sell it for $200, making $20. Guess what? That's a 10% profit margin, nothing changed!

My car gets about 24mpg in mixed driving and would be able to carry a 6' painting. I drive a station wagon. You will not attract the ladies however, in the wagon. 🙂

They probably fled to the suburbs because housing in the city was unaffordable to them.

1. Prices are fixed
2. Oil companies watch the media and any event that may place some relevance to oil, they jack up the prices.
3. Americans depend too much on oil/petroleum and the oil companies know this.
4. Americans need to learn how to conserve their fuel and stop putting money into the pockets of oil companies
5. Our government has some play in the oil prices. The refuse to stop the jacking up of oil prices due to having some stake in their stock.
6. If you whine and complain about gas prices, do something about it. Ride a bike (like I do), ride a scooter, walk, do something except for complaining about it. You're not helping the situation except being a nuisance to those around you.

Yeah because infrastructure built on affordable gas [cities expanding and people living in far off towns with highway access] is easy to take action about. Bike all 50 miles to work. That's really doable.

Nope, usually they fled to the suburbs because they couldn't survive with less than a 5000 sq ft house, so that was unaffordable in the city. Or the minorities were coming..

Would you bike 50 miles each way if you were paid for time spent riding?
about 4 hours there, 2-3 hourse rest/recovery/food, and 4 hr back? 😉
I know I would. This would make Tour De France look doable.

I'm not going to quote your whole post though I appreciate your comment. I can understand that. Maybe I'm a little spoiled living in the city I live in where you can actually bike to work which is merely within six miles (depending on where you live) from work and tend to turn the other way regarding places where others live. I apologize if I come off a little extreme.

Or other people like myself - when I worked at a place where little mattered, I did bike to work. But in the job I have now, if I ever showed up sweating my balls off from biking, I'd be immediately fired. Hence, I drive to work. So what's your all-knowing solution to this?

If they have showers, show up 15-30 min earlier and shower and put on full clean clothes from boxers to the tie and black shoes.

Not everyone lives in big cities.

Seriously how many companies have showers at work?

Biking is not an option for me because I live a 25 minute drive from work and that is mostly highway. OP, got any other ideas?

Oil isn't at a fixed price. No commodity is.

Complain about oil and profits? Buy stock in oil. That way you'll make money too, or maybe be closer to breaking even between the profit from that and paying for gas.

Since everyone says oil is in a bubble and it will fall, i'm taking the contrarian position and saying it is going higher, suck it.

The Saudi's agree

$140 is just not high enough.

Shura member calls for oil production curbs in Saudi

Saudi Arabia's Shura council (parliament) will hold a series of meetings over the next two weeks to discuss a controversial proposal by a key member to curb oil production to save reserves for better prices

Why? They can do whatever they want, it's their oil.

I continue to drive 30k miles annually just as I did when gas prices were lower. I still have to get to work, run errands, and visit family on occassion.

Did you read what I said? 25 minute drive by the HIGHWAY. There is no public transportation between here and there.
