1. Prices are fixed
2. Oil companies watch the media and any event that may place some relevance to oil, they jack up the prices.
3. Americans depend too much on oil/petroleum and the oil companies know this.
4. Americans need to learn how to conserve their fuel and stop putting money into the pockets of oil companies
5. Our government has some play in the oil prices. The refuse to stop the jacking up of oil prices due to having some stake in their stock.
6. If you whine and complain about gas prices, do something about it. Ride a bike (like I do), ride a scooter, walk, do something except for complaining about it. You're not helping the situation except being a nuisance to those around you.

Investors/speculators jack up prices, as well as the weak dollar.

Did we really need another oil thread? :(

Sorry. Had to get that off my chest Zim. So many threads about oil prices and I feel like it's a bunch of complaining and no action taken. I'll edit my post with more family friendly language.

I actually don't mind the high oil prices at all. $5 and $6 gas is the only thing that will encourage Americans to car pool more, use public transportation and in general become more environment aware.

My "warning" wasn't so much about your language, but the tone involved thus far, catch my drift Cdubneeddeal?

Listen, I understand your frustration about people not taking Cdub, but please understand some people CANNOT take action. Let me paint a story for you and its only one. I work 45 minutes away from work. I work part time while putting myself through school. I live about 20 minutes from school, I have to go to school 3 times a week and drive to work 4-5 days a week. Thats a lot of gas. There is no public transit system worth taking here. I drive a Mustang (bought it two years ago).

The options i have?
Get a job closer to where I work. This is not an option for 2 reasons. 1. My manager will not allow me to transfer to a closer location. 2. I cannot take another job just yet, I'll be graduating in less than 5 months and it would be stupid to enter a new job only to leave a few months later.

My other options, get a more fuel efficient car or bike. I won't buy a bike as its unsafe driving the long distances I do with a lot of old people on the roads. Sure, I could buy a more fuel efficient car. I would give up my Mustang (which I really love) to save a bit on gas. But I'd also be losing my money in the Mustang (depreciation) and probably have to shell out a couple thousand on a down payment on a new car. Not really a situation a college student wants to be in.

In short, there isn't a whole lot I can change without drastically changing my lifestyle. If I can afford it, thats what I have to do. Instead of cutting on my driving habits/gas consumption its easier to cut in other areas. Instead of having quizno's for lunch I'll pack a PB&J sandwich. Instead of ordering Domino's pizza for the big hockey game I'll cook a tostino's. Instead of getting Pepsi at the store I'll buy publix brand cola. Little things that save me a few bucks here and there, because ultimately sacrificing those things is a hell of a lot easier than drastically changing my gas consumption. I suspect thats the situation many Americans are in.

I paid $4.61/gallon for Premium tonight when I filled up my car. That is no lie...and that's a station that is usually pretty inexpensive in this area.

I apologize if I come off a little extreme.

You were not acting "high and mighty" Cdubneeddeal, but w/ the numerous threads about oil prices here in OT, I just wanted to make sure that you did not "single out" any member.

I get exactly where you are coming from man. Hell, if I lived within a mile or two of work I'd bike my ass to work. I would enjoy the workout and such, but a lot of Americans drive a great distance to work. In an ideal world I'd love to drive only 10 minutes. You think I like sitting in traffic for an hour coming home? Nope, I freaking hate it. But I don't have a lot of other good options at this point. Although Im hoping my degree will open up some opportunities for me.

It's quite ignorant to place blame almost solely on U.S. oil companies.

It's clearly a speculation bubble. It will burst when analsysts start making predictions that even speculators find absurd (like $500 a barrel).

It's just sad that some people (and I'm NOT referring to oil companies) are getting rich off of other people's misery.

Call me Chris damnit :p And if you feel any of my threads are out of line, please shoot me a PM. I more than willing to hear your side and negotiate.

I don't single out one person/member, I merely speak about the general population. I just hear so much complaining yet, many people refuse to explore other avenues regarding getting around. Some feel like their stuck with the high gas prices (Granted, people such as Cuda are stuck) but those who have other options, can do so.

I like cheap gas as much as the next person, but to tell you the truth I think more people just like to complain about it then are really, really being affected by it. I have a buddy who tells me that we need to drill Alaska, filling up his car is way too expensive. But he still smokes a pack of cigs a day.

Also, all it takes for me to realize how little people actually care to do someting about it is to just observe my commute to and from work. Where I live it seems like everyone wants to go 75 in a 45 and they waste no time getting up to speed when the light turn green. I go pretty close to the speed limit, and pretty much every day I get tailgated until the person behind me gets a break then they gun it to get around me (I guess 55-60mph is too slow for a lot of people in a 55mph zone) just so I can end up sitting right next to them at the next red light anyway. Congrats on wasting way more gas then you have to just to get to the next light/pocket of traffic during rush hour.

One of my good friend's girlfriend just got a Jeep Commander a little while back. They don't have any kids, nothing to tow, no off roading... she says that she's always drove SUV's so that's what she's used to. I've heard her complain more then once about gas prices. Dumb dumb dumb.

Maybe with gas prices too. :D

I feel like this discussion comes up several times a week. There is no option for some people to buy a more fuel efficient car or take alternate means of transportation to work and other places. Granted, a lot of people do have options, but a lot of people don't. I'm fortunate that I have a small car that getss good gas mileage. From my calculations my '00 Cavalier gets about 27mpg city which is not bad by any stretch of the imagination. However, I drive 8 miles each way to work and back each day, for a total of 16 miles per day. Yes I could have stuck with the job close to my house, but unfortunately I have college stuff to pay for, gas to buy, and car maintenance to pay for and a handful of hours a week at the local grocery store just wasn't cutting it. There are no buses or trains that run from my town to the town I work in so public transportation is not an option.
