Far more annoying? People who don't capitalize the beginnings of their sentences, don't capitalize "I," don't know how many periods belong in an ellipses, and don't understand that "overused" is one word.

I'd say you're more of a redneck ignoramus for thinking that "hunker" is a redneck word, OP.

It's not.

Definition of HUNKER

1
: crouch, squat —usually used with down
2
: to settle in or dig in for a sustained period —used with down <hunker down for a good long wait — New Yorker>
Origin of HUNKER

probably akin to Middle Dutch hucken, huken to squat, Middle Low German hōken to squat, peddle, Old Norse hūka to squat
First Known Use: 1720

This sentence is in desperate need of a verb.

I think some of the work phrases are more awkward than that. I've never liked phrases such as, "I'll ping him later." Since when did we become network capable and implement ICMP? :p

Ping actually comes from how submarines used to communicate, so it's completely appropriate. IETF was trying to be cute, I mean really, Packet INternet Groper?

Pinging referred to active sonar used for detecting other craft, not communications.

A hundred-thousand Frenchmen in New Orleans
New Orleans there are Frenchmen everywhere
Your house could fall down
Your baby could drown
Wouldn't none of those Frenchmen care

Everybody gather 'round
Loosen up your suspenders
Hunker down on the ground
I'm a cracker
You one too
Gonna take good care of you...

I saw we all hunker down and come up with a suitable replacement phrase.

Shelter in Place.

Kinda got freaked out when my weather radio sent out one of those. Shelter in place? What the fuck does that mean? It's actually one of the warnings of the emergency system. Damn thing was blaring at 5 in the morning "shelter in place! shelter in place! shelter in place!"

upon further research I was supposed to break out the duct tape and plastic for the windows and hunker down and shelter in place.
