You don't think that maybe, just maybe, your Dad was exaggerating a bit?

A car with 5.2 inches of ground clearance will not get through 12" of snow even with chains and a running start.
he had more than 5 inches of ground clearance.

Besides, I was up and watched him drive up our lane-way which wasn't shoveled out.

I also drove that car in nasty snow storms in 12" of snow with no problems. Even my 1987 Crown Vic had no problems in 12" of snow. I deliberately tried to get stuck while testing out new snow-tires and it never got stuck.

dry tortugas is badass!

anyone who says they prefer cold/snow over warm weather is either....

a. full of shit and trying to make themself feel better about where they are living.

b. has lived in a cold area the majority of their life and doesn't know better.

c. doesn't live in an area that experiences seasons and weather changing so again, all they really know is cold.

this snow bullshit fucking blows. only good thing is that i will be snowed in tomorrow and won't have to work.

I don't think anyone said they prefer it over "warm" weather. However, a lot of people I know would rather it were 20 degrees outside than 90 and humid. You can dress for 20 degrees. You can work in it. You can do a lot of things. Naked, 90 and humid is still uncomfortable.

Depends on the density of the snow. Worst I drove in was a Nor'easter. I drove down to Scranton to pick up my stranded brother. The snow had started just after I crossed into PA. When I got to him, he said something like, "here, let my buy you dinner for driving all this way" - "NO! We have to leave NOW." By the time we got back up to NY - about an hour away, roads were being closed. By the time we got through Binghamton NY, it was really bad; at some point they gave up on Rt 17/I-86 - no plows were out. The snow was deeper than my clearance, but the roads were cold - there wasn't a lot of slippery slush underneath, and the snow was light and fluffy. I'd guess there was about a foot of snow in the worst areas - and I drove on, about 20 mph, if that. Never saw another car in 50 miles or so. Before I got to Elmira, NY, a group of semis went by me. When I hit the ruts in the snow from them moving back into my lane, I started spinning out of control. I looked out my driver's side window to see the grill of a semi coming at me. Somehow I managed to regain control and get back into my lane. Got off at the Elmira exit - I couldn't drive I was shaking so bad from that. 15 minutes later, I continued on, and was happy to see that they had plows on the road once I hit Steuben County. (Corning NY area).

One thing I like about snow is that at night, if your streets have street lights, the snow illuminates everything and makes it so bright it almost feels like walking during the day sometimes. In places where there's no snow in winter and you're wearing black or non-reflective clothing, almost all the cars don't pay enough attention to see you at night when you're crossing a street and want to run you over. That's about the only good thing about snow I think, and you can sort of drag your feet across the roads when walking instead of picking them up like you have to in the summer (unless you have rollerblades or those kind of shoes that have wheels on them or something... man I need to find me some of those).

as kids my friends and I would toboggan at night. The snow reflected the light from the moon and any other light source.

I remember doing that as a kid, fun times. It felt so peaceful at night. Sometimes just crash somewhere lay down in the snow and look at the stars. Crazy that some places want to ban tobogganing. Guess they rather have kids staying indoor playing xbox and playstation, it's safer, and buying all those games stimulates the economy. :awe:

-9F outside right now, wind chill at -30.

Potentially have a job offer coming in late this week for a position in Mississippi. Was an "apply and see what happens" thing, but had been leaning toward declining even if offered. Days like today make me think I should just take it...

And then you get Mississippi summers where it's so hot and humid that your balls are pasted to your thighs for 3 solid months.

Here's why places down south shut down for extended periods of time:

That's A LOT of snow. That came down on Monday. It's Wednesday morning and we still haven't had a plow. Most people can't get out of their driveways. We only could because I had a little electric snowblower that we've been walking around the cul de sac trying to clear the road out a bit.

We've got cars stuck in road (that silver equinox is burried). I tried digging it out for about an hour this morning and no luck. There's other cars buried in snow banks trying to get out blocking the way for plows. Just overall winter fuckery.

Yeah.......there's that. Gets pretty warm and humid here sometimes (MN) depending on the year. But ... my wife is from Jacksonville, and the avg highs and avg relative humidity are within 1 degree and 1% of Jackson for July/Aug, and I've spent several weeks in Jacksonville in July. There's a reason I'm leaning toward not taking it 😀

As I always tell her, when it's cold out you can always put on more layers. Naked is naked.

where do you live?

also how is that Equinox stuck? it looks like it should have no issues pulling out
we have a Torrent (same car) and that would not get it stuck

I'm in Central Kentucky now.

They bottomed it out on a bed of snow (under it) and the streets here have the most insane curbs here I've seen for driveway entry. They don't shave down the curb for most drives like I'm used to. The front tires are stuck in the rut created between the street and the drive. Can't push it forward because we can't rock it past the curb, can't push it back because it's bottomed out on a bank of snow I wasn't able to dig out. Just needs tow strap and a tug from something bigger.

Welcome to the South. I saw your picture and knew that would happen. That's lot of snow. Enjoy some family time and eat some good food.

I'm from the deep south and I'd much rather have cold and snow than 80 degree temps.

You don't live in the South, son. Rude and Exterous haven't sent you that damned black ice. Coefficient of friction is a negative number with that crap...a large negative number.:colbert:

Told you to move to S.C.:colbert:

Be safe. Got a generator or is the power situation set?
