I laughed my @ss of at this. It's genuinely funny! 😀 Even given her backwoods-type dad, my GF is very much a city girl. She disassociated herself from her family for many years. Unfortunately, now she lives w/her Mom again, but her mom is a city girl and lives in a pretty snazzy apartment in a pretty snazzy neighborhood. It's Dad that's the hick.

I've had several PMs on this. Thanks gang. I really like all of you; even those who disagree (respectfully, of course) with me. I said this earlier, but to clarify;

I'm not a hick. I am a city boy. How city? NYC, born and raised. (Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens...lived in all the boroughs except Staten Island.) How's that for city? I've been in South TX for almost 10 years now. I like it here. No snow. 🙂


Anyway, I hate to see animals suffer. But if I call the ASPCA, everyone will know who did it, you know?

I talked w/the GF tonight. I told to stop such a wimp and take the damn dog the pound a give it the needle.

Someone brought up a good point (too lazy to check whom..) "Who the hell wants a 10-YO dog with health and mental probs?" The answer is almost nobody. I got a PM from someone who volunteered to take the dog if we got it all cured. That person is a true saint. You know who you are. 😉

But this dog, IMO, isn't really salvagable. It's old, very sick, old, has diseases, it's old and ....you get it.

I would also be hesitant that other people (GF, her father) knew that you did it.
You never know when something like that could be brought up or used against you.

There are many local organizations who would take this animal, nurse it to health if possible, or put it down in a less abrasive manner.

i.e. Don't take it upon yourself to empty a clip into this animal.

Piss off, he's not talking about "emptying a clip" into the dog he is talking about a dog that VETERINARIANS have said is going to die eventually. Remember, it's not dying because the owners sucked so much as it is because it has some disease or ailment. True it could have possibly been affected by treatment but you don't know that.

It isn't as if he's going to blow a couple limbs off firstto make it squirm. He is going to do the right thing.

Why is it more "abrasive" to use a gun than it is to poison the dog?
Your perception of it is more abrasive, not the method.

You would appeal to my (extremely) paranoid side, wouldn't you? Damn you. j/k 😉 I didn't even think of that crap....
 
One other thing. The vet DID say that the dog's bladder/kidney thing was managable, but the dog would have to take meds for the rest of it's life. Call me insensitve, but I wouldn't want a pet that required "medication maintenance." To me, a pet is a pet. It is not a child. I have a child...there's a diff b/t my son and a dog, and NO; I wouldn't take my son out in the woods and shoot him for cryin' out loud.

I respect everyone's opinion though. Notice I haven't bashed anyone (well, except for one.........) for stating that I'm an idiot for wanting to shoot the dog. Or I should better put it "opting for that course of action." I just can't see making this dog someone else's problem.
 
Do you know how many animals would be on this earth if we tried to save every last one of them. We would be overrun with them. You 'taking care' of this dog solves a lot of problems. The dog will finally be out of it's misery, you and your gfriend will be rid of the problem of what to do with it, and you'll be helping control the overpopulation of animals that we already have. People are too sensitive to these animals. They should be treated good and loved when they are alive and well but they shouldn't be treated like humans when terminally ill. Just take it out in the woods somewhere where you won't be hunted by PETA nutjobs and end his terrible life painlessly. I commend you for taking the innitiative to take care of this when your gfriend and her dad won't.

And yes I have had dogs as pets. I fortunately didn't have to take this kind of action with any of my animals.

Make sure you aim good and don't get too close. You don't want to get splattered with blood.

a little dog like that would fit in a good sized one, it would get a few seconds of exhiliration ..followed by a sudden stop.


















just kidding, kill it the legal and humane way, if you did shoot it, and someone even got wind of it, by say......POSTING IN AN INTERNATIONAL FORUM! then you be an easy target for animal cruelty charges.

My advce is to shoot the owner and date the dog, this way both sides deserve what they have asked for; the dog a happy life, and the owner being put out of her misery 😀

Where are you from? I can't really see the little thing not being able to be recovered after some love and care. Geez just a flee collar and good food and a bath every now and then.

There's a reason most educated, civilized people don't go out back and shoot their pets in the head.

Geez, no offense, but you make it sound like hard work. Take the pill(s), wrap some cheese around them, wa-la! medicating the dog took all of two seconds.

Why would someone get an animal that so unconditionally loves a human, who would even die for that human and not even want to give them some medicine that would help them?

We had a diabetic cat that we gave daily injections to for 8 years and in return got 8 years of unconditional love from him. There was never any question that we would do this since he was our responsibility.

Nobody has proven that MichaelD's idea is inhumane. Thanfully MichaelD has finally decided to take responsibility for the dog, something his girlfriend should have done a long time ago. I trust he will use good judgement in deciding what to do with the dog. To say he should go to hell for shooting the dog is rediculous.

The way I see it, there are four options:

1. Take the dog to a shelter. What many people fail to realize is that often times these shelters are full and not willing to accept additional pets or have lengthy waiting lists. Sure, he could drop the dog off in the middle of the night, but this isn't exactly the act of a model pet owner, is it? If the shelter doesn't have room for more dogs, they will be forced to have it euthenized. Why should the shelter be forced to take responsibility for his girlfriend's problem?

2. Bring the dog to the vet and have it euthenized. Probably the most responsible, yet most expensive option.

3. Take the dog to the middle of nowhere and shoot it.

4. Do nothing.

Seemingly, those of you who are bashing me (and that's your perogative...) don't have the time or intelligence to read ALL of my responses to this thread. I'll summarize it for you, in small words, too:

1. GF cannot have pets, she is asthmatic and allergic
2. Two years ago, she took the dog in b/c her brother was neglecting it. She did it out of sympathy and then she got sick (sicker, actually)
3. Dog is at her Dad's house. He has no compassion for animals whatsoever and neglects the dog
4. 6 months ago, both local shelters refused to take the dog in
5. GF doesn't have the funds to get the dog well again and buy the medicine every other week
6. I'm not paying for it
7. I'm tired of watching everyone do NOTHING and the dog suffering.
8. GF will try the shelters again this weekend
9. Pending #8 not working, I don't know what happens then...maybe I'll just take care of it and tell nobody
 
Good plan, MichaelD. Try and do it in one shot, and remember to dig the hole first. You never know who might stop by and next thing you know your digging a few more holes. You could be there all f*cking day!

Do you think that with the 4 options you gave us you have rediscovered the Americas? What you have listed makes perfect sense - does not have to be REstated, we all knew it. If MichaelD wanted our influence, and will do what we said, 90% of us say that if he wants to get rid of the dog he should take it to the vet so the dog will be put to sleep and not shoot it. If not he must take a better care of it - and I agree with the rest of the ppl here, with a bit of love, better care AND some WILL, the dog could be 'restored' to its best.
 
Is the local SPCA or dog pound further than the woods? Or do you just want the pleasure of killing something and not want to admit it?

I don't understand why having a vet kill the dog is the "right" way? The dog will be put down painlessly either way. Isn' that what matters. Have you ever read Old Yeller?

Bullsh*t! KCL will instantly stop the heart, but it is hardly a humane way to go. KCL is the third injection in a "lethal injection" it is only given after giving sedatives and paralytics. A KCL injection would not be pleasant at all for the dog. In addition to stopping the heart, it would cause massive muscle contractions (at a minimum).

DO NOT GIVE IT KCL!!
 
taking the dog to the humane society will just waste their funds. In the case of the one in my town, it will just waste tax dollars. No one will want the dog and Im betting they are at capacity already, so there is probably a 90% chance they'd have to pay to kill/dipose it themselves. And not only would that be dollars wasted, its also money that could have been spent on spaying/neutering for poor families adopting. They do this so someday, the overpopulation of dogs and cats might not be a problem.
 
The quality of the humane society depends a lot on the people working there, I've come to find many are just glorified dog pounds.

That said, I don't see why it would hurt to take the dog there as opposed to blow its brains out - some people really do go for the bad luck/bad shape dogs, and worst case it gets put down like the original intent.

I think it's creepy to drive out with a dog you care for even a little, and kill it that way, it would really haunt me. Even if I could handle that, what about the girlfriend herself, Michael has described her as unstable, who knows how this might come boomeranging back in some weird way some day, when things might not be going so well.

I agree; it would be creepy...IF I knew the dog well. The dog was at her apartment for maybe the first two months we dated. Most of the time, my GF was over at my place. I know the dog and it knows me, but that's about it. Call me cruel or odd, but I do believe in Mercy Killing. I hate seeing people or animals suffer. Trust me; I am dealing with the "people" part of it as we speak and have been for about three years now. There are many things that people don't talk about on the internet. That is one for me. If I could get away w/it, I would've ended someone's suffering a long time ago. I'll leave it at that.


As far as the unstable GF part goes. You're right about that too. But then again, we are all unstable about certain things, to a point. But you ARE correct and are not the first person to say "this might come back to haunt you." That makes me worry. I will most prolly not shoot the dog myself. Most probably...
 
I had a cat for many years who was given a great life and went through more than his nine lives. when he went, he had 3 legs, one good eye, partial facial paralysis and a thyroid problem. We held on to him long after he enjoyed life and I still feel guilty about it because I was too much of a pussy to put him out of his misery. In the end my father took care of it.

You may not have the stomach for putting a bullet into an animal, but don't begrudge someone who does. Sometimes doing the hard thing is the right thing.

Dropping a mangy sick OLD animal off at the pound in the middle of the night as so many have suggested is both spineless and ultimately is probably crueller. I don't envy you MichaelD, but I admire your fortitude.

Whatever happens, keep your head up.
