The nano just looked too sleek to pass up and its just what I need for the gym/jogging.

Anyone able to review it yet?

Just wait a bit, they'll come out with a competitor product. Do you really need 1000+ songs just for jogging?

He can always use uncompressed files or even Apple's lossless compression

I bought a mini about 13 months ago. I love it. First one died about a month after I got it but apple replaced it in the apple store with very few questions.

I'll stick with my mini until the battery dies or a drop it or something. I use it for running so the 7 to 8 hours of battery life is fine - which is the only drawback really.

Hey, Ipod's are cool but I think they're too pricey. I'm very happy with the Creative Nomad 30 GB jukebox I got last Christmas. I think it was maybe $250, and with 30 GB I could just about fit every CD I own on it. I think now you can buy it for around $200 or less, and there's a 40 GB model, too (in fact, I think I've seen a 60 GB). They're really not that big, and you can also use them as hard drive space for anything you want to store. I've got a mount for it rigged to the handlebars of my bike, and I cruise around the neighborhood listening ...

... I haven't gotten hit by a car yet.

You do realize that the iPod Nano uses flash memory and doesn't contain a hard drive right? Doing a sinple search, most 2GB flash drives are in the $150 range while the iPod Nano is $200 for the 2GB model. The 4GB flash drives run about $250 and up while the iPod Nano 4GB is $250.

The 5GB+ audio players you see all use miniature hard drives which are more prone to failure due to moving parts.

You will become popular again in AT in 2009 when Apple reaches world domination and you "were one of the first who bought an Apple flash player" ;)

There's third party software for transfers but I don't know how good they are (or which are best).

Yes, I realize that. The flash is from samsung who recently said they can sandwhich some more flash and can go up to 16gb. Which, as we all know with apple martketing, means we will see new Nanos popping up every 6 months or so with higher and higher capacities.

Dell has the Ditty
Link

 That ditty is sh!tty. There are way better mp3 players that have more features, better asthetics and same or higher capacity than that ditty.

Rather then bash the Nano, why don't you give us some examples of these so called "way better mp3 players".

DUDE.. PSP!!!! GET THE PSP.. you got your MUSIC, MOVIES, GAMES...
I find it Comfortable, not to big to be in my pockets.
And atleast, if it falls, I WILL KNOW IT unlike a small little P.O.S gadget, where, if it slips out of my pocket, I WONT EVEN KNOW IT and lose out my money...

PSP all the way,,, Cant wait till someone figures out how to make a GPS out of the PSP... I be set!

tip: PSP + 1GB Memory Card..
Seriously, 1GB = 100-150 songs... More than enough for a 8 hour WORK Schedule.
I pretty much have my PSP playing exactly 7 hours.
1 hour of recharging when I get to work.. I use my PSP as my car radio whle being recharged as well.
(yes I have a cd-tape transfer that works with the PSP)
so from Full Charge PSP, running off the memory stick, your baterry life is approx 10 hours.
with my music, I have 7 hours worth...
8 hour schedule...
1 hour of recharging.. the second I hear:
everclear: Closing Time.. I know what time it is.. CLOSING TIME!!!

Also, in my car, I carry a External HDD, 40 gigs...
So, if im tired of my music.. Connect the external HDD via USB, swap out the entire 1GN of music for whatever music I want.
The changing time of deletign 900mb of music and instaling another 900mb of music is approx 7 mins.

the other 90mb (10mb naturally off) is a mp4 movie, hellsing or getbackers full episode that I watch during my break.
and the quality of it is good.. than again, I encoded the vid and shrank it while keeping very good quality for its size...

PSP> any Ipod, mp3 player.

You don't have to. No iTunes on my computer. I use Winamp with the iPod plugin and sometimes Ephpod. I bought a 15GB 3rd gen when they were on clearance just before the 4th gen came out.

The first one I bought was a little crappy. The battery life was pretty short, like it had a bad battery, and after a while one of the buttons failed. I exchanged it after 5 months through their mail-in warranty which was pretty hassle-free, and the replacement I got back has been working great.

He bought it from me and with shipping, the armband, and no taxes I almost gave it to him ;) in comparision.

Frankly I wouldn't want to be encumbered by a huge accessory if a smaller one can do the job just the same. When you are running/working out the last thing on your mind should be " let me put my half pound media player down that is 5 " x 3 " "

But that is just me. People are just jealous because they dont have one. I too swore I would never use an apple product as they are largely more marketing on the outside..but you know what?

A) So what, good for them. Dont like it don't buy it!
B) They actually scored a hit with the ipod. It's drop dead simple, the scroll wheel is great along with the interface.

I will say, however, Itunes can just go delete itself. I hate it with a passion. It refuses to transfer 1500 of my mp3's to my ipod.

Ephpod is a very good third party program, in my opinion, that is better than the rest.

Sure, You say that NOW... We'll see in six months :)

I swear that iPod's or iTunes send out subliminal messages trying to convince you to buy other Apple products! I used to HATE working on Apples, but somehow I ended buying a Mac Mini about four months after I got my iPod Photo.

My point was that compared to flash rom drives out there, which is basically a USB interface on top of some flash roms, the iPod Nanos are not bad for their price. You're comparing a flash based device to a hd based device. Flash, especially in sizes larger than 1GB, is much more expensive than mini HD's.

The Samsung flash memory announced won't be available till late 2006 and originally asn't expected till 2007. It's also 16 gigabit, not gigabyte. 1 byte = 8 bit, so 16/8 = 2. That's 2GB flash chips.

The iPod Nano's use 4x512MB flash memory chips for the 2GB, the 4GB had another memory board stacked inside, so these new Samsung chips would definitely allow 8GB and 16GB iPod Nanos in early 2007 at the earliest.

Now comes the business section of why you will not see a 16GB iPod any time soon. Cost. These are flash memory chips made on 50nm process. Brand new processes or larger sizes usually have a premium attached to recoup some of the costs associated with moving to a new process or making larger sizes.

You're saying the iPod Nano as they cost now are rip offs yet Apple had to secure substantial discounts to even make it at the $200 and $250 price points. What makes you think they will be able to secure much larger flash memory chips and still sell it at $200 and $250 any time soon? Especially since production will likely be somewhat limited until late 2007 when Samsung starts to convert some of it's older fabs to put out larger flash memory chips and more companies switch over to a 50nm process as well.

It's one thing to wish for certain price points and certain features. Everyone does it all the time. Sure, I'd love a 16GB flash based audio player with all the fixings for under $300 in one years time. But I very much doubt we will get one until 2008.

I don't even own a iPod Nano but considering what you're getting, it's most definitely not a rip off.

He gave me a very good deal indeed :)

I defintely won't be using iTunes!! Really, if there was competition in the MP3 player market for SMALL players, then I wouldn't have bought the nano. With the size and how sleek it looks I couldn't resist.

ROFL!! I got my iPod after owning an iBook, and then later I got my iMac (maybe the subliminal messages also come from iBooks ;)).

Please, while the PSP may be a good game player it blows at music. Volume is way too low to make it even tolerable.
