... and the people in New Orleans are refusing to leave again. Last week an Army Engineer stated on CSPAN that the levee repairs are so early and weak that they may not hold up against a strong thunderstorm.... and these people still want to stay.

Man, I feel sorry for the NHC here - after Katrina everyone's taking this stuff very seriously, all based on predictions 5 days out. There are going to be some really pissed-off people if the NHC isn't right.

Find a map of the US, take your fingers and measure the space from NOLA to Mobile, AL.
Now take your fingert that was on NOLA and put it on Port O'Connor, TX.
That would be the swath taken out of Rita hit as a Cat 4 Storm.
There is pleny of reason to be worried.

Good thing there's almost no chance of Eastern Pacific storms hitting the US.. I think hurricanes Kenneth, Jova and Max are all three currently happening right now. Kenneth was a cat4, iirc.

I was just reading about the hurricane that wiped out Galveston in 1900.

I've been showing the students in my American History/Current Events class the video of Isaac's Storm that was rerun last week on The History Channel. We had been talking about Katrina and I told them about the Galveston hurricane and about the video that I had taped a year or two back when it was first run and they wanted to see it. It's about two and half hours long so they've been watching about 20 minutes of it each day after other classwork. They've been fascinated by it.

I don't know if it's still being shown on The History Channel, but I'd highly recommend it if you're interested in that sort of thing. The book, "Isaac's Storm" is a pretty good read too.

well all the students of UT medical branch were ordered to evacuate asap as of 17:00 CST Tuesday. At the rate it's strengthening, I just hope I have a non-flooded apartment to go back to. The midterm is still scheduled for Tuesday though 🙁

Projected to be a cat 5 by thursday morning with slight weakening occuring friday before landfall. Yep this is going to make landfall at atleast a strong cat 4, if not a cat 5. And its going to hit somewhere in the gulf.

Also oil speculation is making oil/gas prices go back up. So fill your tanks ASAP as the price will probable go above $3 a gallon again.
