S**t, just took a peek out the back door, I see a set of shingles on the grass, not good, too dangerous to go into the yard right now and check for the extent of the damage.

Power now going on/off every couple of minutes, TV signal gone, it would be a miracle if the power holds out, we are now into contact with eye-wall winds.

If you have interior access to your attic and it's safe going up there consider looking for water intrusion. If rain is coming in your ceilings will begin to collapse.

Good luck.

The storm has passed and now the winds are coming out of the west ... the direction the back of my house faces. It sounds a LOT worse now. Other than some fence down everything looking OK here ...

Just saw NASA is leaving a 'rideout' crew on site at Canaveral to maintain emergency systems while the storm passes over. Damn, I would love to be there for that !! I'd love to see the raw, powerful fury of a hurricane as it swept overhead. No deathwish or anything, just always fascinated by what nature can dish out.

If I didn't have a wife and 2 kids, I'd be a storm chaser in the midwest around tornado alley, crawling under a highway overpass as a big F4 touched down nearby.

Just checked latest map. Still not 100 % believing the perceived right hook. At first it was to start moving just after crossing into Georgia. Then after it hit SC. Latest track now has the turn begin once it touches the NC border. Everyone around here happy it won't reach us, but itsomething looking like initial tracks not that far off.

The wind and rain are really picking up here in West Jacksonville and small wind swept debris litter the streets and driveways. Palm fronds galore along with leaves and fruit are scattered about in my neighborhood. The power has been fluctuating over the last 15 minutes or so eliciting warnings from my apc but it hasn't gone out yet on this side of town. Closer to the coast they are getting rocked pretty good and the power outage map along the coast is fairly consistent from the lower part of the state upwards following the storms track..

It just better not fucking come up to MD or else!!!!

I've been waiting years to go to this fucking Redskins/Ravens game and I will not let Matthew fuck it up!

Oddly enough, the best storm coverage I saw today was on CNBC. They had Marcus Lemonis on (because Camping World IPO'ed today) and he spent a good chunk of the afternoon interviewing storm victims from Florida. Since he's from the area, most of his questions and insights were spot on!

If he ever got tired of being a billionaire business developer, he could always get a job as a weather reporter.

Seems like Florida lucked out on this one. It stayed just far enough out to prevent the damage from being really bad.

It got really close but we were lucky because we were on the weak side of the storm. The area got hit by the western side while back in 2004 we got hit on the eastern side of a weak yet fast moving Charlie. Its ironic if you think about it ... Charlie was a small, weak (75 MPH max) but fast moving storm that did a LOT of damage (I had to replace the roof). Matthew was huge, relatively slow moving and very powerful but caused relatively less damage ... all because tropical cyclones in the northern hemisphere spin counterclockwise to their path of movement. We just happened to be on the weak side this time.

Thank God ...

Amazing what a difference 40 miles makes. If the eye tore directly up the coast things would be so much worse. Still a bad storm, but the results are so much better for Florida than they could have been.

Thank God that's over, at the last few hours Matthew decided to notch just a tad to the east, (about 30-35 miles off shore) It was hellish hearing s*** flying around, my 10X10 steel shed got yanked off it's base and is now lying in a '2 deep pool of water upside-down. Looks like a Cessna crash LOL, also found 11 pieces of 3-tab shingles lying on the lawn, IDK where they came from yet as it was still to windy to go up on the roof. I had it re-done in '03 and the den shingles were in decent shape so they just laid another layer on top, this is now not allowed per code and now I know why. 1/2 front gutter also torn off and s**t is everywhere. Using my genny now, 95% of the county is without power. I read this in the local paper,
"Utilities crews will not restore service to homes if they hear a generator running because generator hook-ups can create electricity dangers. In order to keep homes and recovery crews safe, residents that may have hooked up generators to breaker panels are urged to turn off the generators when they see power crews in the neighborhood."
Huh? WTF do they expect people to do, go for weeks and weeks without power?, I'm using heavy-duty extension cords I had stashed just in case this happened, I will gladly shut it off if I had a CLUE as to when they will be in my area.

BUTCH1 is alive :)

You would think they would at least knock on the door, it is their job to restore power.

Yikes that sucks about the shed and potential roof damage. It's hard to match shingles so might have to redo the whole roof. But at least the house is still there, I suppose.

Don't people use transfer switches down there? Not sure why the utility would be worried about generators, pretty sure suicide cords or improper interlocks are illegal.

Yea, I get it that some morons use "widow-makers", a cord that uses the 220 outlet on the genny and then plug that into the dryer receptacle which energizes the entire panel, eliminates running extension cords all over the place but you MUST have a means of disconnecting your panel from the grid or you will energize the grid. They will be skipping over many areas if that's the case, Home depot, Lowes, HF were selling every genny they could get in stock plus all the one's sold after '04 (ton's, walk into any pawn-shop and it would be common to see 5-10 in stock). Mine's only a 4K set but it's gulping gas like mad, 4-5 gallons since 5 PM, might be the ancient Norge fridge I still have LOL.

Man, if you owned a generator company and a weather station you could make a MINT!! Manufacture generators, ship tens of thousands to HD, Lowes and Wal-Mart and then forecast a hurricane. They'll all sell at any price.
I'm in the area that got hit hard by Sandy and we were lucky, we only lost power for about 48 hours. Most of the food survived and many many people had it worse. Power out for weeks or even months. My sister lost power for more than 2 weeks in the great Halloween Nor'Easter/Blizzard of 2011. What a mess that was. Now whenever there's even a chance of a major event like a hurricane generators sell out a week in advance. Home Depot unloads the truck, wheels them onto the sales floor and they're gone in 5 minutes. Like the hot Christmas toy of the year only the fights for them are more violent. People are buying them from HD or Lowes for $500-$1000 and then putting them on Craig's List for $3000 to $5000 and getting that because they're not available anywhere else.
