Be safe, Butch.

Thanks, probably my last chance to post, getting some laundry done and moving my genny inside the garage within the next hour. FPL (Florida power+light) is predicting 2 MILLION homes will lose power!. Hoping to get to take a nap in the AC before the shit starts, with the portable-type genny you can't run it until the storm has passed. We have ATT U-verse, IDK if it's based on underground infrastructure, I hope so..

The first feeder band from Matthew is passing through Duval country right now and things aren't too bad. I'm even going to leave my car in the driveway because I really don't think that it's going to be that bad inland. I don't have any trees to fall over on it and the closest one is in the neighbors yard across the street and it's too short to make it over here. The batteries in my laptop and tablet are charged and I've got my cell modem handy if my cable and vdsl internet connections go down (yep I've got two isp's).

For what it's worth, during the power outage in Tallahassee after Hermine, all the Publix supermarkets remained open as they all had their own generators. They set up charging stations for phones etc. in every one I saw as well.

edit: Hopefully their stores in the area affected by Matthew also will remain open and be able to provide much needed food and ice and the same courtesy charging stations that were in Tallahassee.

In Orlando, I have my generator fueled up and ready to go. We have had a few mild bands pass. The heavy stuff comes early tomorrow.

Don't understand these latest tracks. They've now got it going further up the carolina coast similar to the early projections, but they still have it doing a massive right hook heading back towards cuba.

We still Sam's for bulk most the time, but I truly love Publix myself in general.

I hope everyone comes out ok, the looping back projection does have me worried a little, with the other one out there.

The local 6pm news was showing how the local stores had already run out of food. Everything on Jax Beach shut down earlier today in preparation for the storm. The first truly heavy band is still down near Daytona Beach but it won't be long before we start getting rocked up here in Jax. I'm thinking about setting up my gopro clone to time lapse in the morning.

And now the NHC website is down.🙁 But at least it means more people are taking this seriously and paying attention.

Stay safe everyone!

2am ET Update:

Winds are down to 120mph, but that still makes it a major category 3 hurricane. Even without technically making landfall, it's going to make a mess of Florida.

It is 7AM and the wind is pretty strong here near Orlando. The eye of the storm is supposed to pass at its closest point in the next 2 hours. Still not enough light outside to see if there is any damage. So far and IMHO this storm has (so far) been pretty mild compared to Charlie in 2004. Things should be improving here past 1000. Hoping things get better soon ...

Tree down across the end of our street, but that looks like the only damage anywhere near us. We lucked out in south Florida. Good luck to our friends in north Florida. I'll probably head out after 8am with a chainsaw and see if I can get the tree off the road.

Well I've still got power and more importantly ***internet access*** and things are just like a thunderstorm outside. The wind isn't even howling yet and there's no debris in the yard or street. The city did sent out vacuum trucks yesterday to clean out all of the storm drains in the city which should help with the drainage.

Maybe, though the first pass plus Nicole will have sucked some heat out of the system.

It's been a strange summer, I just KNEW something was going to happen. Usually you NEVER need to use sprinklers in the FL summer but this August I needed t do just that, not a drop of rain for 3.5 weeks, these storms usually march out to sea and drop a lot of water on the gulf-stream, that just didn't happen this year. Power still on in the Daytona area but I don't expect it to last past 6-9 this AM.

Amazingly still have power, most of my neighbors don't, wind is already nutty out there and we have the worst yet to hit, 4-5 hours from now the 100+MPH stuff arrives. Am I scared?, fuck yes I'm scared!, mostly by the huge trees whipping around and hearing crap bounce off the house..
EDIT:, 360,000 now without power in FL, that will grow much higher in the next 2 days of course.

I just set up my action camera in the window facing south to record Matthew as the stronger bands move up into the Jacksonville area. Power and internet are still holding and I'm hopeful that I don't lose them through the course of the day.

S**t, just took a peek out the back door, I see a set of shingles on the grass, not good, too dangerous to go into the yard right now and check for the extent of the damage.

The weather in my area is getting noticeably worse and the wind speeds are steadily increasing. Between the security cameras and the action camera I should have some decent footage of it as long as the power holds. More importantly I still have hot coffee and internet.:mask:
