S***, yesterday this was supposed to miss the eastern seaboard now it's track has it just offshore of FL and heading north. Since I live 3 miles as the crow flies from the beach, (Daytona) I'm getting quite concerned, it will defiantly feast off the gulf-stream and grow stronger. Link from weatherunderground.com, https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/atlantic/2016/Hurricane-Matthew?map=model Even worse is we've been getting hammered by heavy afternoon rains for 3 weeks now, the ground is pretty saturated right now and with a monster pine tree 25 ft from my house it's kinda scary!.
Site might not load, it's getting ton's of hits since this change was announced a few hours ago. If there is already a thread about this I couldn't find it..

One of our local forecasters has been telling everyone for days now that Matthew could easily go farther west than predicted and everyone ought to be watching and prepared. Looks like he might just be right. Hopefully it won't go as far west as Tallahassee. We're still dealing with cleanup from the last one. Hope it misses you BUTCH1.

Yea, I've got a 5K genny so at least I won't have to chuck out all my food like I had to do in '04, TWICE but putting up my plywood shutters is a HUGE PITA and now I'll have to schedule a gutter-cleaning and stock up on gas and propane. Luckily I got off my ass yesterday and did a lot of yard-trimming so that's out of the way.

Co-worker of mine was leaving for the Bahamas this Thursday. He was telling me he was supposed to call this morning to find out the status of his reservations due to Hurricane Matthew. He has travel insurance for the airlines, but he was wondering what happens with the reservations and money he's already paid to the resort. Haven't had a chance to talk to him yet on what happened, but I hope he doesn't get screwed over.

have a gas generator that I've never used and have no idea if it works. will try to figure it out tomorrow. will probably pick up a few bags of charcoal and another tank of propane just in case.

Thanks, our worst part of '04 was Charlie, it was "supposed" to meander up the west coast as a Cat 1 storm and hit the panhandle, Charlie had different plans though. after getting up to 145MPH winds in ONE DAY it veered hard right and plowed across the state, it's eye exited into the Atlantic 4 miles south from home. We stood on our west-facing porch and watch the huge flashes as the power-grid was being wrecked, then it was our turn. A feeder band was visible from the front window, it was the blackest, meanest thing I've ever seen and it was spewing lightning bolts like I was watching a CGI movie. When it got here a small F1 tornado came over the neighborhood and broke off the tops of two pine trees in my backyard, pine cones were hitting the roof sounding like we were being strafed. It's difficult to describe fully what a 95MPH wind will do to trees as you watch them bend into impossible angles. 11 days without power from that one and no genny either, you could not buy one anywhere. Disasters bring out both the good and the bad in people, it's an interesting thing. One guy, desperate for a genny, waited till the wee hours of the night and brought a $30 lawnmower to someone's backyard and stole the genny leaving the mower there running so the owners wouldn't notice the absence of the noise, damm...

Grab 2 quarts of 30W engine oil, if you need to use it for an extended period, you will need it. One local small-engine repair shop was on TV with dozens of ruined genny's, they work their ass off and the oil has to be changed often. People were running them on the original oil for weeks until the engine was fubare'd and NONE of them could be fixed under warranty.

I live in North Wildwood NJ. Right on the southern tip of NJ. I still remember the February storm of last year. Think it was called Jonas. Caused a ton of destruction. The gym I go to was flooded. The owner just upgraded much of the equipment which was ruined by the storm.

I don't particularly care for living at the seashore. We're getting too many of these storms lately. It's a headache.

Be safe Butch. I'm in the extreme eastern side of Orlando, about 30 miles from the coast, and I'm watching this thing intently. The past few days the forecasts have been shifting this thing further and further west, and it has been defying all intensity predictions. If this thing manages to maintain or regenerate at least a cat 4 status when it gets to the bahamas and is still pointing at you, I'd honestly say to get out of there.

if it's coming for you, where do you go? 10, 100, 500 miles away?

Hurricanes do not move overly fast, if the things are in the killer range you get in a car and drive where it isn't and see what is left afterwards.

People in places like Haiti really don't have that option, for the most part.

Thanks, problem is and always will be are the roadways around here (like most areas) are not built with the thought of the entire coastal population being on them at once, it turns out to be a nightmare. You have folks in cars that don't belong on a highway that break down, pissed off people burning gas while going nowhere. in '99 Fred was at 155MPH and we were right in the middle of the cone, I got off 2nd shift and we left before the evacuation order came down. Next AM, I-4 (main hgy through the state) was a parking-lot, people had left Daytona and 2 hours later had not made 15-20 miles yet. It got so bad they were considering closing all east-bound lanes to get people the F*** out. Fred turned at the last minute although the area did get 75MPH winds and no power for 6 days. Kind of a dammed if you do and dammed if you don't situation.

It's always a cluster-**** though, look at what happened when Katrina hit, same thing, gas stations ran out of gas, old clunkers broke down and clogged the roadway, a 1st-class mess.

When I was in the Navy, I was deployed to Miami in 1992 for the Hurricane Andrew relief effort. Hope it misses you guys. If not, at least not a direct hit. Had a buddy move to Miami last week. Talked to him yesterday and asked him about Matthew. He had no clue. Said nobody was talking about it. I was like, "Cat 5 Hurricane". The Navy pretty much evacuated all non-essential personnel and all their aircraft from Guantanamo Bay to Jacksonville.

Well I'm in Jacksonville and I'll have an action camera standing by to record whatever happens after the power goes out. Until then the security cameras will record it all for me, otherwise I'm not going to worry too much about what I cannot change. Plus I'm on the west side and well inland so coastal issues won't affect me either. We did get an EF1 through our neighborhood earlier this year when the first tropical system passed through the area and the cameras recorded it pretty good. From their perspective it looked like a microburst with no debris swirling about. They did record the neighbors palm tree getting stripped and flying over into our front yard.

What's funny is on like Sat or Sun, the major NYC weather station was all like, "Most models show it taking a slight turn to the right once it gets past the Cuba area..."

Fast forward to today and now it looks like the entire east coast is going to get smoked. Fun fun.

I'm worried about Matthew and I'm way up yonder in New England. The spaghetti models are all over the place on this one, some have it moving directly west for a direct hit on Florida and some directly east and out to sea after only grazing North Carolina. But other than those outliers about half of the models have it moving directly up the coast for a direct impact on NYC area and the other half have it shifting east towards Cape Cod. Every hour the project track changes wildly.
