Damn I can't even begin to imagine how much it must suck to lose everything in these storms. With high costs of building materials most people will have a hard time even being able to rebuild. Almost better off moving somewhere else where housing is cheap and starting life over I guess. Probably end up losing your job anyway because workplaces are also going to be gone.

Florida is where housing and/or cost of living is cheaper per sq foot than elsewhere, and there are some tax breaks(No income tax). Seniors with money to blow go there for that reason.

That's why some of your fellow snowbirds buy Trojan Horses down there for the upcoming Canadian invasion of the U.S. 😛

Wow didn't realize some places had no income tax, that's like having 10-30 grand extra per year depending how much you make, I guess people that live there have more extra money so guess this hurts a little bit less.

If you make $100,000 a year in New Jersey your total state income tax would come to just over $4,000 per year. As a single filer

I don't know, maybe keeping hard truths out of site of the absolute dumbest people on the planet that need those truths the most, because it makes them "uncomfortable," is pretty much why this bubble thinking persists?

This is absolutely not a "bothsides" problem by any rational quantifiable measure. Allowing the perpetually uninformed, incurious, laziest among us to dismiss actual reality with these stupid bromides that they feed themselves, when faced with the direct consequences of their lifetime of absolute shit decision-making, is pretty much why we can't have nice things.

Really? The dangers of CO is covered over and over and over every time there is a forecast for any weather that might cause power outages.

I'm seeing a number of articles about people complaining how long it's taking to get power back. They don't seem to realize that rescue and recovery efforts are still ongoing and that power restoration make take weeks or months.

I read an article yesterday that said it could take a month to get power back in Ft Myers Beach. The population of Ft Myers Beach is 5,600 and apparently 90% of the buildings there are gone. The total number of people without power has gone from 2.5 million to around 400,000, so there's that.

The wind/rain from Ian finally made it to my area today after the precip "stalled" just off the south-shore of Long Island the last 48 hours or so.

Obviously this is a pale shade of what Florida or SC/NC experienced but it's still pretty nasty out there today with gusty wind and intermittent downpours. (also raw/chilly)

Crikey. Center passed right over my house here in Rockledge and you got it worse than I did. Crazy storm.

You know probably just that we get high winds so often the trees aren't ready to let loose. We keep them trimmed so they don't suffer the sail effect too.
 
With all the loose things blown out of the trees, I should be good for a few years and not need the hurricane tree trimmers.

I have a lot of trees in my yard... 😳

Never flooded in the 30yrs I have owned this home. But Michael was real close to making it to the doorstep. Ian had breaks in the deluge so the drainage system handled it well enough to not get sketchy. Not interested in traditional sand bags. I had to Hurri-CON harden our building at KSC three times. I vowed never to fill another sand bag after the 100s I did for that.

Ian effects linger here as well. The St. John's is only a mile or so from here and still has flood warnings.

Our area is so battle hardened, yard waste trucks were by the next day to pick up our debris.
 
Damn it, a couple of the spaghetti models for 91L don't look promising. Though it may not be a monster. 92L probably will be a beast, but right now it looks like it won't threaten N.A.

Alot of homes in the path of Ian did not have flood insurance because flooding has never occurred there in past hurricanes. (ie: central florida)
Homeowners insurance pays for wind damage but not flood.

Seminole County commissioner calling the flooding “a 500-plus-year event of quick rainfall in a short window of time.”

And even those that had federal flood insurance, damage to the home may exceed the max payout ($250k).
