I thank the OP for his linkage, and taking care of give me credit for my work. Us photographers have a lot of trouble with people stealing pictures and not giving credit for it.
To clear things up, that is a completely original photo - the only manipulation done to it was that it was brightened a little after the fact, but other than that, the image is entirely unaltered. The equipment list used for that shot is described in the blog post. The light source I used was an LED flashlight that I got for free from Honda.
So the answer is this: the image is 100% REAL, NOT a render or even a partial render. For those of you who like sushi, this is another demonstration of light painting.
