ha i was partially right 🙂
i could tell the front was real, but that back was tricky... with the background not having as much detail, it was tricky... high-resolutions are truely needed though 🙂

The triangle in the back is rendered for sure.

aye, that's what gives it away first.

Yup.

The walls of the room aer also to plain to be real.
*shakes head*

did either of you two see that the answer was already posted 😉
its infact a real image
*bangs head against wall*
What do people have against READING A DAMN THREAD?

These threads are always easy to figure out. The ones that look rendered are usually real as people want to post something that goes against what the norm expects.

Why doesn't the spotlight on the chalk eliminate or lighten the shadow of the cue stick near the chalk?

snoot

Angle of incidence. The light is as parallel as it gets without being coherent.

Also if you look closely, you can see that there is a spot on the cue in the same place, adding extra shadow to balance out the extra light from the chalk light. There is even a slight jag where they overlap.... so basically what you expect to see is there, it's just not as pronounced as you were expecting.

The use of the spot lights and the felt made me think it was rendered. The use of spots are typical in a lot of rendered work and the felt looks to be a texture, it just doesn't look real to me. However, the chalk was the one thing that made me think it had to be real, or that it was a real chalk that was photo-chopped into the rendered scene, but the perspective and shadow was too good so maybe the whole scene was real.

The other items in the scene, the rack, the cue and the balls, could have been real or rendered, there's really no way to tell. Same with the background.

Wow, I come back from a business trip and look at what I find.

I thank the OP for his linkage, and taking care of give me credit for my work. Us photographers have a lot of trouble with people stealing pictures and not giving credit for it.

To clear things up, that is a completely original photo - the only manipulation done to it was that it was brightened a little after the fact, but other than that, the image is entirely unaltered. The equipment list used for that shot is described in the blog post. The light source I used was an LED flashlight that I got for free from Honda.

So the answer is this: the image is 100% REAL, NOT a render or even a partial render. For those of you who like sushi, this is another demonstration of light painting.

Thanks for viewing.
