I would like to get a R9 280x equivalent so what would that be branded as R9 390? All these new numbers are kinda confusing to me.So would I be better off just getting a 280x now or should I wait?Any estimates on pricing as of yet?

Probably the best buy anywhere is the 290. The 970 is also good, if you were planning to purchase and play TW3 and Batman right away, as you get both free.

I don't think with the leaks we know about now, there will be a better perf/$ than the current 290. Just my take.

Most likely 2048SP 380X with 256bit 2/4GB GDDR5.

Price? I guess between 200 and 250.

I wouldnt buy a 280X. Its based on tahiti and its tesselation performance is so bad it goes south fast in newer games depending on settings. If you want something AMD today get the 290/290X.

Why the heck would anyone pay for a 2048 SP Tonga when a R290 often goes for $200-$240.

A simple rebadge implies taking the same silicon and giving it a new name. 285 is already slower than 280X. If its the full die, its potentially ~= or 10% faster, which is still far below R290 class.

What are your thoughts on getting the 290x now with 1440p xg270hu? Still hold out?

Just wait, there will still be stragglers of R290/X inventory post new stuff launch that you can get a good deal from. Otherwise there's always ebay.

We don't actually have facts to prove anything besides top GPU is a water-cooled beast with 4/8GB HBM.

Oh wow I just checked prices on R9 290x cards and they have dropped in price alot since last time I checked.$275 for a XFX R9 290x seems pretty reasonable to me. Should I grab one now or do you think they will come down in price a bit more with in a month?
Or should I hold on to my cash for 390 or 390x?

You're better off waiting until they reveal the RETAIL cards. It's possible that the OEM and retail cards are one and the same (disappointing), but you only need to wait like one month to know for certain.

True, but then a lot of good deals for retail 28x/29x will be dried-up by then. As we have seen before, once supply stock starts going down, the deals get less and less, as the newer products get pushed. There definitely would be some nice used deals to be had, but a 290 is a great buy right now IMHO. Unless you are ready to spend $600+ on your next GPU, I don't see much compelling evidence to wait, based on what info is out now for sub $350 GPUs...

Stock will eventually dry up, it's true. In that case, if you absolutely have to buy something today, buy from someplace with a decent return policy. Otherwise, we still don't really know what will be available in the retail channel for under $350. OEM announcements don't mean much as far as Amazon, Newegg, and Microcenter are concerned.

Very good point. Agree.

I think people should try and list when and what OEM vs retail is different. And I think they will find a severe lack of higher end cards.

The bargaining right now goes on that 380 is just OEM and that some retail 380 will be very different. Its just desperate.

AMDs last OEM rebadge was the complete 7000 series into 8000. And there wasnt any retail cards. 200 series came for both OEM and retail, just as the 7000 series.

So pick your poison. 400 series is the real deal and ~9 months away. Or that the 390 series is the only new thing. And so far everything points to the later. With 400 series being a die shrink in 2016.

Pretty much everyone gets this. What doesn't make sense is the positioning. It implies that Hawaii won't be rebranded, which can only mean that Fiji will be a very small leap. (That or Hawaii will be the 385 for whatever reason, or even that the leaked 390 picture was of a rebranded 290X and only the 390X and 395X2 will use Fiji, and likely a cut down version for yields at that.) Whatever the case, these cards are not branded correctly. 360 should be 350, 370 should be 360, 380 should be 370. If you can look at this objectively for a second, you'll agree.

Maybe :)

Given the circumstances in which the 3xx stuff is appearing - 20nm falling through, huge gains due in the next gen not that far away etc - you'd very much expect pragmatism to dominate over tidy logic.
