How to give Resignation letter?

I plan to give my Resignation letter (2 weeks notice) to my boss today but I'm a little nervous on how to say it.

Do I just go up to him and say "I need to speak to you for a minute" and then say I would like to put in my resignation letter and hand him the letter. Or is their a more formal way of doing it.

Thanks

you could put the notice on their desk and then poop on it, that would be pretty funny

Nah, put it in a bag of poop and then set in on fire.
<starts running away real fast>

Pull the boss to the side and tell him you have some disturbing news. Tell him you slept with his wife on his desk. Then give him the letter and say j/k.

Do it verbally, and back it up with the paper. Explain yourself, but don't feel quilty. If they needed to, they'd get rid of you quickly, and it is within your right to do the same. Just don't burn bridges.

Good advice.

Verbally and then hand them the letter. And be in control of emotions, don't go blathering about poor work conditions or anything. Burning bridges always comes back to bite you in the ass.

Oh, and I know some people who got fired on the spot for resigning and got escorted out of the building so be ready for that (clean your desk out earlier).

I spent a couple of hours cutting letters from magazines. Then used some paste to make my resignation letter... similar in form to ransom notes in movies 🙂 Bosses got a kick out of it, but reported back that human resources said they'd rather have something typed up.

If you're in a right-to-work state (like Texas), you're legally under no obligation to give ANY notice. It's a courtesy to give some notice of your departure. Generally two weeks is standard, but can be more or less depending upon the situation.

do you have to give them a letter? i thought all you had to do was tell them..

I've held some pretty high level positions and never submitted a letter of resignation. I do get a kick out of reading about them on ATOT.

Keep the letter simple.

You don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

A letter of resignation can be as simple as one or two lines.

"To whom it may concern:

This letter is to formally document my resignation on July 6th, 2005, two weeks from today's date.

Thank you,
Robert G. Hossenfeffer"

Put it in an envelope, tuck the flap in... don't seal it... so if whoever you talk to needs to see the formal letter it's not a production to open it.

Ask to meet with whoever it is you need to tell about this, tell them you would like to put in your two weeks notice.

No more is required.

If you want to be chummy and tell what you are leaving for or thank them for a great working experience, go for it. But it's not necessary. Also, if you plan on really doing this, stick to it. Don't let them try to pursuade you with a bigger paycheck or something... because you'll be their bitch for the rest of your employment.

Whatever you do, don't tell them off or make any comment that could be taken negatively. They could end up calling you a year from now with an offer you want.
